Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

Why are they saying in the info "This is not a lay off"?

I am confused that in the info it states "this is not a lay off". While I am on the higher end of the payout I am worried by accepting the offer if this would take away chances of receiving unemployment since technically we are voluntarily quitting and who is to say you can find a new job quickly with the way things are going. Plus benefits were not included so I would need to take out a market plan for coverage as Cobra would be ridiculous. I never thought it would come to this especially since my team is so busy. UHC people are like family to me I love my team. I wish they would have called it what it is a lay off and not a voluntary quit.

It's not a layoff YET. They are nicely asking you to leave. If they don't get enough volunteers they will move to laying off.

But it literally IS a voluntary resignation? Nobody is holding a g-n to your head. Neither has anyone come to you & said you’re personally getting laid off.
UHC looks at attrition every year. This is nothing new, just a new (better!) way of seeing if some people are ready to go voluntarily first. I get the timing with the nightmare going on in the federal government & the delivery were both cr-p, but I don’t feel anyone needs to panic—unless maybe you’re sitting at a 2 or low 3, or on a performance management plan, etc.
Breathe, people, breathe.

I see a lot of anonymous posts using words like ‘someone’ or ‘they’, with no credible news source confirming anything. UHG has over 400,000 employees, if this is true it could impact a small group or many people.

The thought of losing our income is scary for anyone in any capacity. My thoughts and prayers are with you if you are facing this challenge. If you receive communication from UHG that you are impacted, read all documentation carefully, consult HR, your local labor department, the unemployment office, an accountant, and/or an attorney about the best decisions for you and your family and circumstances. Your age, debts, family size, location, education, the offer you receive, and so many other factors will determine the best course of action for you to take. Don’t let nameless, faceless people steer you into a frenzy with information that doesn’t apply to you.

Don’t be anxious about something that hasn’t happened to you, it is a waste of time energy. Some people may be grateful for a severance package, be glad for them. Others may see it as a sign to pursue a dream. If you are living paycheck to paycheck, yes start your search now, gather contact information from peers for references, network with anyone who may be hiring. Think about industries you have never considered before. Stay positive, pray, and get to work. Job hunting can be a full time endeavor.

Someone asked, what is the incentive to leave now? Some of us are close to retirement, we're already looking for a different job, or can see the writing on the wall and want to get a head start on the job market. It also provides us with a date for planning purposes, unlike the surprise that will be coming 6 months fro now for everyone else. The job market is only going to get worse in the months to come. It provides a plan at least. Its not for everyone though. Personally for me I was already looking for a different job. I might as well take the larger payout, and obtain new employment by May. I don't plan to get on unemployment or anything. I'm able to do this because I followed Dave Ramsey's advice many years ago. I got out of debt, and remained living on much less than I make. now I have more options to do what I want.

You won't qualify for unemployment. It's probably a contract of voluntary leave. Basically your two weeks notice. It's also not a layoff per say. No severance package, which means no unemployment. It's a way to get rid of people without having to pay a severance package. This is the only reason I think they are letting you choose.

They say it’s not a “layoff” and then say basically if the magic number is not met that there will be involuntary layoffs that won’t get this offer.

Check your state first!! UHC does not make that determination on if you will get unemployment benefits or not. Your state does. My state will give unemployment for this but it's no where near close to a livable amount. Anyone on here saying you won't get unemployment is very uninformed and likely only speaking for their own state. Do your research for your situation and good luck to you. To us all.

What is the incentive for people to resign? Quit now and lose your insurance and you may not be eligible for unemployment - OR wait to be laid off?

Layed off Nov 2023 took me 6 months to find a new job, not joking applied to at least 20 a day below, above and currently where I was at, and in diff areas, only had interviews with a few companies and those processes are also 4-8 interviews long now- the one I got hired with was a 3 month process…it is not easy out here, my husband is one in the current UHC boat so he better start looking but I wouldn’t bet on him taking it and finding a job anytime soon

A layoff implies temporary or that you can be called back. This is voluntary resignation. It says in the offer you would be eligible to re apply with the company in one year.

If you voluntarily quit, you would not receive unemployment and you are correct regarding health insurance benefits. Also, how long would it take to find another job especially now
This is a copy of Trump and federal employees.

It may or may not impact your chance at unemployment. But in some states, unemployment is garbage and not a good option compared to the VSRP. Just depends on the situation of the individual.
