Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

Voluntary layoffs—employees affected what are your thoughts?

How are we feeling fellow employees hearing this news?

A lot of noise on here from outsiders so just wanted to hear opinions from those like me, actually having to make a decision on this

I’ve only been with the company 1 year so the package isn’t too great anyway but definitely better than if I laid off. So pretty unsure of what to do.

Someone commented that this should have been communicated better. I've been with the company for over 30 years. Through an office closure only to be laid off several years later. I didn't want to lose my tenure, and was rehired at a much lower pay grade. When the office closed, where I worked, we were told everything was great and continuing as normal...just before people were tapped on the shoulder, letting them know they were out a job. There will be no communication, until there is.
I agree that this likely has everything to do with the cyber attack last year, the execution of our CEO and very likely the attack on Medicaid and the expected removal of the Affordable Care Act by our country's current elected leader.

The shooting really messed the company up. I knew Optum and UHC was bad before but the mu---r of the ceo just made everything ten times worse.

This is completely ridiculous. You made billions and you only want to offer measly weeks of severance pay. You say you care about your employees and thank us for our hard work then turn around and do this with no explanation. We have questions and we’re not even allowed to ask them. You think housing calls off shore or using AI is going to make your company great you’re wrong but you’ll do anything to line your pockets with more money. Who cares about people who depend on this job to take care of their families. As a company you should be ashamed.

I worked for uhc for 13 years. Never felt like they gave a rip about us ever. Last year they told people that goals were increased and if we didn't 90% or above we would be terminated due to the war?? What the he,, I retired in January this year so happy to be out of that stress. After BT was mu---red i was no longer comfortable and I heard about them being investigated for insider trading. They pay is a pittance while we are the ones doing all the work and those ceo's are making millions annually. I felt something was going down last year. Im glad I'm out. They only care about how much they can make. Denying claim after claim.

When my husband accepted a buyout at another insurance company he received 6 months pay and benefits. Why would anyone take this? Take your chances for 2 weeks of extra pay.

@a6+1jman4w22 If you've been here for several years, like I have, then you know your comment is complete BS. This is not just corp America & business, since I've never seen anything like this in all my years of being here. This "program" may not be a mass layoff, but if you're not going to be honest and say it is THE BEGINNING STAGES of a mass layoff, then just sit quietly. It's not helpful to be dishonest to ppl when their lives will be affected. Lastly, if you truly are an employee, then you know the meeting was NOT held by "some leaders", but was held by the person (VP) who is 5th in line behind the CEO Andrew Witty. So if a good job communicating was not done, it was not done by a HIGHER up.

You’re so lucky. I’m in Florida and unemployment is a joke here.

Thank God I live in Minnesota, max unemployment per week is $914, which would be $3656 a month. That coupled with my emergency fund, I am feeling good about a potential layoff. I’ll start applying now but won’t take that severance package no way.

I used to work at Optum. Was redeployed then left.
: Do not sign anything. Attorneys are saying if you choose this they can turn around and not pay you, they can state metrics, attendance, anything. It is a bad idea to take this offer. Wish yall luck.

What part exactly of UHC is this? I work in C&S but in clinical leadership and accountability?

How is it not a mass layoff when they are mentioning 30, 000 jobs. And no it's not good for anyone with over 20 years. Your basically going to get $1,000 for every year u worked in that package they want to give you.

To the person that said, "Do not take the voluntary resignation, you’ll get more in unemployment if you get laid off!"

What the f-ck planet are you living on?! You are really out there in la-la land. Unemployment in my state pays out a MAX of $275/week for a max of 12 weeks. That's the equivalent of making $6.875/hour.

Everyone please do your due diligence, and calculate what you would receive in unemployment benefits in your state so that you can make an informed decision.

Do you think Andrew Witty, ceo of UHG had to reduce his salary below $19 million a year?

I’m also fairly new, my year is coming up in March. I’m torn! The way they announced it without giving us a chance to respond was heartless and cruel as well.

Healthcare is still having lingering after affects of UHG's Change Healthcare hack, combined with the enhanced subsidies for the ACA/Exchange going away 12/31/25, add in the possibly looming PBM breakup, huge Medicare Advantage issues, then throw in funding cuts and RFK Jr. and you have a perfect storm.

Healthcare is headed for a crash. With UHG dumping all their employees, it'll be a frenzy over any remaining healthcare jobs. It's time to jump ship/industries. 2026 will be a bloodbath for healthcare.

UHG is likely going the turtle method. Firing everyone/anyone they can, outsourcing/offshoring and AI (which will ultimately fail, but hey let's let them waste their money and laugh in the end).

Hopefully they end up as the next cautionary tale. They deserve it.

I'm in the same position. There is a regular severance package at UHC as well. They buffed up the package for voluntary leaving, but personally I'd rather take the 4 weeks of pay and be able to apply for unemployment benefits if I am laid off. If you voluntarily resign, you most likely won't be able to get unemployment so when the lump sum runs out we would all be in trouble.

Personally, I think this is a great option. I’ve been here for several years. It’s corp America and business - big cuts happen every single year and that’s just the nature of the business. This option gives employees the opportunity to leave with a severance pay. The other option would be for the company to do their blind mass layoffs with no warning.

People are complaining about review time - those are locked in already so this doesn’t impact. You can still take your PTO and you still have 2 full months to work before the severance. So if you’re not happy, on a final, or close to retirement then apply for the offer as it may be a good fit. You DO NOT have to apply for the resignation if you don’t want to.

This is not a mass layoff. They are giving employees an option to leave with pay. And sounds like some leaders did not do a good job of communicating what this is.

Really unsure on what the next best steps are. Take the leap and sign or stay only to be laid off later with less of a severance package. Double edge sword no matter how you look at it.

This morning we were all pulled in a meeting and first told by one of the higher ups “I know many of you get nervous when we have these unplanned meeetings, but don’t worry it’s nothing bad.”

Then she announces that due to financial challenges, and you know the rest.

I’ve been with the company almost 10 years and I have seen random layoffs but nothing where they are offering these packages to all employees.

Everyone in my team is now worried about their job. Some have worked for the company almost 20 years.

This is not how we wanted to start off the week.

My professional opinion if you are needing or wanting a job in the medical insurance sector, if you leave you may find it difficult to find other positions making same pay (if not entry level). I think government contracts are changing so they know they will be losing money and most medical insurance companies will be cutting where they can to make up difference.

Wife has been there 4 years and was just told today that she has 1 week to decide. This is the same time frame for her review and raise. Cr-ppy timing. Offering 8 weeks severance.
