Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

IT-OT cybersecurity function

Does Cybersecurity function will have massive headcount reductions? Or what will be the impact on USA based Cybersecurity function jobs?

Most of Cyber doesn’t actually do cyber. It’s just a bunch of people doing PowerPoint or “managing” a process. Lot of useless people moved into cyber to reduce their layoff risk. Still useless.

@bw you’re kidding right? Our entire cyber org is filled with people that know nothing about cyber or the field. They wouldn’t know a refinery if they were standing in the middle of one. Our people run security tools that they know nothing about, take the report and give it to someone in risk that doesn’t understand it and then us in the field have to deal with their spew of useless bile. Hack 80% of them and we will end up being way more secure.

I’ve raised a few cyber issues recently. In a couple of cases the person assigned to it completely failed to understand the problem, let alone how to fix it, and essentially gave up.

In both cases it was pretty basic stuff, and in both cases, they were senior engineers/analysts.

Our cyber group is overstaffed with unqualified medium performers who got booted from their last role by managers too weak to put them on PIPs. Trying to work with them is an exercise in futility as they don’t even understand their own questions

If you think cybersecurity jobs can be done in India, you must not know anything about true cybersecurity. These teams aren’t just protecting your data, they’re protecting critical infrastructure like the PCN. Chevron supplies a vast amount of fuel to key US locations including SFO and LAX. Not sure you want to trust that to someone in India who has never been to a refinery. The CiSO just quit and there is no one able to take on that role with the govt clearance and report directly to the BOD.

Talk to almost any Cyber member in Cybersecurity ... almost 90% of them just moved there the past 2 years and has no legit working cyber background. Tons of them are paper pushers doing IRM stuff back in the ARCHER days and has no legit Cyber technical knowledge. Tons of them are just supporting regular SaaS or Vendor applications for Cyber and Forensics - at the end of the day only a very few has true Cybersecurity technical background....

Expecting big cuts and jobs going to Manila, not Engine. Many teams are overstaffed and searching for work anyway. Not to mention the CyberWaste program...

No brained to shift all IT to India. Not even ENGINE. Go lower cost MSPs like Exxon did.

General consensus is all IT related fields including cybersecurity, data management, and planning, cost control, and doc control can be done from India.

They have been hiring cyber security professionals in Manila. They still will have US presence but most low level jobs will be offshored to Manila, BA during this ROM and India (in the future)
