Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

Time to Join a Union?

I know this is going to upset some of you - the US folks who believe that anyone to the Left of Genghis Khan is a Communist and the ANI bootlickers who've bought the propaganda dished out by our corporate masters … but, folks, it's time to join a Union! Hit me with your downvotes, but you know it makes sense!

It's time to admit to ourselves that Allstate employees are being abused by a leadership focused only on profits and not on the good of the employees. Right now at ANI, leadership is forcing employees with exemplary service records and long tenure to accept sub-standard redundancy packages. They are threatening to offer only Statutory Redundancy terms unless employees sign NDAs that ensure their silence. They are using fear and intimidation tactics to bully employees - it's not fair & it's not right!

Think about what joining a union could do for you - for all of us!

Better Wages and Benefits: Unions negotiate on behalf of workers for better salaries, bonuses, and benefits like healthcare, retirement plans, and paid leave. With collective bargaining power, unions can secure better financial packages for members.

Job Security: Unions advocate for fair treatment and job security in the workplace, helping to prevent unfair dismissals, redundancies, or exploitation. In the fast-paced tech industry, where job instability can sometimes be an issue, having union support can make a difference.

Workplace Representation: A union provides workers with a voice in the workplace. Whether it's negotiating policies or addressing grievances about working conditions, unfair treatment, or discrimination, unions provide a platform to ensure that workers' concerns are heard and addressed.

Support during Disputes: If you're involved in any dispute with your employer, a union can offer legal support, advice, and assistance. This includes situations like wrongful dismissal, harassment, or issues with contracts and pay.

Collective Influence on Industry Standards: By joining a union, tech workers can collectively push for broader changes in the industry, like improved diversity, inclusion, better working hours, and mental health support. Unions help shape policy both within companies and across the sector, ensuring better conditions for all workers.

There are several out there that are worth considering that cover people in IT roles:

You really need to get over the union talk. It will never happen. If you want to be in a union, go to another company. Said a prior employee who knows it will never happen.

Allstate does not tolerate union talk or organization. Those caught trying to to initiate this have quietly been eliminated from the Allstate workforce. There have never been enough to stick their necks out to really get this going. And with even less onshore workers no way this takes off.

Okay, here's my down vote.

Allstate and the way it treats people su-ks. Absolutely. It's a soulless multinational corporation. It doesn't care one iota about you as an individual worker. For all the corporate manufactured rhetoric to the contrary and all the 'we're a Big Blue family' nonsense that way too many people have evidently swallowed. Yearly rounds of layoffs. Hiring from various 3rd world toilets to cut costs. Sc--wing over people who have done nothing more than be on the wrong place on the HR chart and in the wrong place in their salary band. We could go on and on.

You have a choice. Ah...but that would mean getting off your a-s, being responsible for your own personal and professional development and making yourself competitive in the market. Oh but wait, that's too hard. Much easier to grow complacent and come to believe you're entitled to ongoing complacency and unlimited employment, even if it means joining a 'union' that'll be just as happy to take your money and give you nothing for it as the soulless multinational is to lay you off.

Life is not a Marxist Morality Play. If you don't like the way Allstate is treating you, develop yourself and your skills, find a better company and tell Allstate to kiss your a-s on the way out the door. Take the hard road of owning your situation, your development and your reputation vs. joining some racketeering group you want to strong arm the company into funding your complacency and manufactured victimhood in perpetuity.

Oh so many angry down votes, but not so much discussion! It's like no one has a better solution beyond lube up & take it.
OP is right - join a Union! Under UK law you're not required to disclose Union membership to an employer, but you will have access to the Union legal team (even if the Union is not recognised or if you're the only member in that workplace) ... If they keep making people redundant on shaky pretexts you might be very grateful for the Union support.

Adjusters need a union too. They’ve needed one for years. The abuse is rampant without one.
