DEI at Chevron IT

It’s great that we have all white people addressing the topic of DEI and how much we care about it.

And then it got me thinking about how IT is full of Asians - as in, the actual technical professionals in the function are heavily Asian. But yet LC’s leadership team is full of non-technical people who can barely spell out Information Technology and definitely don’t know how their people work.

DEI for sake of DEI might be bad. You can argue that on both sides. I don’t think you should fill a diversity quota and should be competent in your job. But it’s a real big issue when you have the model minority, highly technical, high performing, heads down deliverers of your function to be represented by only white people who can’t write a line of code to output Hello World.

💯 the lack of current technical skills or experience in our ITLT is a major issue. But who cares what they look like. There are a lot of white peoples in IT still doing work too - and often having to babysit Indian contractors who su-k at coding.

Technical people in IT have been explicitly told that they are "too technical" to lead when they put their hat in the PDC leadership jobs. IT leadership only wanted "likeable" flakes and agile know nothings. Well, the results are in. Good job!

No one says they are hired to write code. But they should have risen through the ranks. And they should actually know what they do. Chevron had all this corporate IT project management agile nonsense stuff. And that’s what made sense to our FLT. If BB and LC wanted it to become more technical and hired all these people who code the last 5-6 years, they should have also promoted those people who could have led them, not push agile BS like the current crew did. I think that was the point.

so the top boss of an accounting dept usually knows accounting, HR boss usually came up the ranks of HR…. IT leaders on the other hand , clueless

IT dorks like to point to tech companies as having asians executives. But we are not a tech company, get over it.

But when you look at other IT departments at Exxon, Shell, Conoco… ummm yeah, our FLT doesn’t look like theirs.

I really don't understand what point you are trying to make.
I think you are mad that the people in charge of IT are white, but the people who are writing code are Asian?

After today however, I can see your point that our CEO should be Indian.
