It is determined by your manager and their ability to get HR to get you on an upcoming “list.” I spoke to mine about my intention to retire and knew a RIF was coming up within 30 days per this website, so I just said I would stay through the month before I formally submitted my retirement and if I could save someone else’s job keep that in mind. The morning of the RIF day came and bo-m! I got the email meeting to give me the boot! Unfortunately others on the team were also on the call but I imagine I did save someone.

The unemployment supplement is based on your age - 62 and younger get that plan. If 62 and older you don’t need to do the unemployment to get you benefits.

Now I worked for a VP so they had more “power” to get my name on the list and was great boss. If you have a low level mgr they may not be in the know ahead of time to change the HR paperwork for those targeted.

I’m meeting the requirements of unemployment for my particular state and getting the EH supplement benefits. I will say EH has shockingly been much easier to work with than the state bureaucracy which was/is a total PITA. My EH weekly attestation is quick and easy and any calls I made went straight to a very capable on shore associate who was eager to help answer all my questions. Whereas the state there is no frickin phone number to talk to a human and you wait 20 minutes in queue only to receive the promise they would call me back in a day or two…maybe.

I’ve had two friends try to volunteer to be RIFd- it never works like that- one even volunteered to switch places with someone else who was RIFd who wanted to stay and was truly amazing at the job itself- I don’t think you can truly volunteer like you’d think you should be able to!

If you are riffed, you can always see if USAID, US OPM, etc. are hiring.

If you are riffed you have to take unemployment to be eligible for sup pay. I don't know if you can volunteer but i did have a former coworker say very publicly on meetings that she wanted to be riffed and she was.
