Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

After reorg announcement

This is my 1st reorg. If you are getting cut, how long after the reorg does this happen?

They don't have to give you a notice period. It depends on the situation honestly, it can be immediately upon notification. That mostly happens with performance based ROMs but really they can show you the door without notice.

  1. The lower level the job you hold, the faster they'll want you gone. Immediately is very common. Professional positions may get 2 weeks to 'transfer knowledge', but I know of professional positions who were escorted out immediately, particularly if they were in a position to copy, delete, or compromise data (think IT, Finance positions).
  2. The law requires you be given 'notice', but that doesn't mean you'll be allowed to stay during the notice period. Most typically, you'll be asked to leave immediately, but be paid for the notice period (as I remember it, 6 weeks in Texas).
  3. Yes, get any personal files off your work computer right now. It'll be locked the instant you're expected to depart. The company has redundant backups of all computers, so don't think you can 'delete' something and have it not be seen.
  4. Even if you're allowed to stay a little while, there's a good chance your outgoing email will be blocked, or severely limited (# of recipients, outside recipients, attachments).
  5. Your ability to download data, particularly of large volumes, will likely be eliminated. With impending layoffs (and by that, I mean this year), any large movement of data is already being recorded for possible criminal action should you be laid off, EOI, or quit on your own. Particularly if Chevron data shows up at a competitor's office.

Tengiz Employees that got laid off in 2015 got a single phone call at home plus a certified mail package later to sign. They packed up their stuff and sent it home. Pretty cold for years of loyal service.

OP

  1. you can go to the cvx application website and search open positions by country Philippines, India and Argentina and you will see if your job position is posted for positions. This will give you some idea if you are in scope.
  2. the packages will be announced in the weeks or months in the near future.
  3. if you are interested in leaving cvx then get started looking for a new job. If you want to stay then wait to see if your job is still in your location. People in San Ramon will more than likely not have jobs in CA.
  4. the company still needs people so not all jobs will be moved to another location oversees. But the future of the company is to replace US wage workers with low cost oversees workers.
  5. learn as much as you can while you work at Chevron and layoffs are a part of corporate America. The days of the 30+ year’s employee at Chevron are over.

I’ve seen positions that have been eliminated and those who were left standing were either given severance and gone quickly and then those who they let become a must move in PDC, which gave them some more time. That will be communicated once they notify you.

It depends. Some are allowed to stay for a few weeks to transfer work to others whereas others are led to the door immediatly. A lot depends on the financial sensitivity of our work. In other compaines I have worked for, you show up in the office, your badge does not work and computer password is blocked, and you have to wait for security to escort you to your office to collect your personal items. Best idea is to save all your personal info and emails off system as the ki-l date gets near (pay stubs, vita, active job applications, etc.) and remove any of our other personal matierials from the offcie that might look work related (technical books, etc.), because immediate lock out is possible.

They have to give you a notice period but normally they want you out of the office asap.
