Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

Concerning on the ethics front

Looks like the folks that sold the illegal drives to Huawei are up to shenanigans again.

Was that the one where they stuffed bricks into retail packing, filled semis and parked them in the parking lot and claimed it was sold product?

Who remembers the MiniScribe brick selling scam?

Remember when Seagate sent drives to Google without firmware because they were bypassing federal charges? They shipped drives from China to the US without having firmware. Therefore they weren't complete drives. They load firmware in the US. Criminals.

The senior management needs jail time. I hope the new guy in Washington has his DOJ destroy the Seagate leadership.

And here we are selling HAMR drives w/o mentioning these are HAMR not able to ship to CSPs... The PDF is not from October 2020 as in the file name but from June 27, 2024. These P/Ns show up on the websites of many resellers, including eBay. They even carry the Laser Class 1 warning on top of the label. Clearly HAMR, but we are dead silent. Shenanigans!!

How did buyers figure out how many hours were on the units? Isn't that a SMART data? Even if it was separate, then why not reset that too?

Ummm SMART WAS reset and erased which supposedly only a vendor specific diagnostic command can do requiring diagnostic port unlock. Now how is it a secured Seagate drives diagnostic ports can be unlocked on a market sold OEM drive?

Eh, this is not on Seagate. Someone is selling refurbs or used storage farm drives and passing them off as new. The article even points out that Seagate's official refurb program resells refurbed drives clearly badged as used (I have seen them.) Not to mention the liability for getting caught doing something like this for what...a few bucks here and there? If Seagate were really trying to resell used drives, they would reset the SMART attributes with their backdoor access.

Right now drive prices are high and the some models impossible to find in retail. It's not a stretch to see some shady retailers trying to cash in.

Oh yes the company sells returned and internal tested drives as new to resellers and has done this for a long time. They are so incompetent they didn’t think to clear the farm logs? Yeah it’s fraud and unethical. This is Seagate.
