Good leaders are not born. They are developed through their own efforts, experiences, and the opportunities they are given. Unfortunately, Nike has been focusing its development efforts on the wrong people over the last decade, often under the guise of promoting equality.
Smart leaders land bigger and better jobs. The really good ones have bailed. The ones who remain are the ones who cannot land elsewhere.
REI is desperate. It's a total sinking ship closing stores and laying off thousands. They bailed on their new headquarters campus in Bellevue. They shut down their entire experience guiding program, which, while not profitable itself, trained thousands of people in the outdoor sports that drove their lifetime gear sales. They completely backslid on their returns program. Now, they're basically Columbia, selling mediocre oversized rain jackets so fat people can go snowshoeing for 30 minutes and think they're real mountaineers.
pay attention to the ones who leave - they are the real ones
