Thread regarding IBM layoffs

What will these good results bring to us?

In my opinion - nothing. But maybe there is someone who thinks that because of these financial results we should be optimistic and expect that things here will get better, or at least that there will not be any cuts for a while?

After the 3rd q earnings announcement, several analysts called for IBM to get rid of all of infrastructure via a spin-off except for mainframe and large power. That would exit IBM from the HW and support (TSS) business and let them focus on Consulting and SW modernization. Throw in weather and a couple of older middleware projects that are being replaced by LINUX, and you get to a spin-off of maybe 30-35k which should drop right to the bottom line as the spin-offs would still generate IP revenue

They could sell off Wunderground. That would help both companies. It's long been a shell of it's former self as IBM has raided staff and re-allocated hardware. I swear it's all running on a 4gb VM.

But "which business endeavors they wish to partner out or exit outright" ?? What would be left then other than a pure patent troll royalties company?

IBM has reshaped/restructured itself by buying Redhat into a company that can directly measure performance for approx 80% of its employees. (sales, consulting, TSS, marketing, etc etc) Those employees will be subject to PIP’s as IBM moves forward with achievement/utilization being the measurable indicator. IBM will ratchet up the bar until they achieve what they consider acceptable utilization. The 20% that remain who are not viewed as directly measurable (design, research, coding, manufacturing, etc etc) will be subject to RA’s as IBM decides what business endeavors they wish to pursue vs what business endeavors they wish to partner out or outright exit. IBM is much further along in its restructuring to new “hybrid IBM” as the remaining legacy products have become less and less of a drag to earnings.
