Thread regarding U.S. Bank layoffs

Mid level mgmt

I share the opinion with some poster here who wrote that no one would even notice if half of the mid level management was laid off. Agree?

Agree, but this company is far from nimble or modern.

7 layers is still too many. 4-5 layers are common at nimble, modern companies.

So which layer gets cut

If there are more than 7 layers from the bottom to the too (ceo)ceiling, high risk for cuts if layoffs are occurring. That's the magic number those consultants like.

I am a middle manager on the credit side and fully agree with this. How to expand on the earlier comment from someone about managers who can be individual contributors, I do try to set myself apart in this way from other fellow managers. I don't have any interest in being laid off and I hope it's recognized that being somebody who actually got promoted multiple times to get to where I am I can often jump in and actually know how to get involved in different roles on my team. That being said we know life cannot be very fair at US Bank.

Prople keep saying that it is Makenzie consulting on the job cuts, but I have been told by senior managers that it is Price Waterhouse and that they are analyzing org charts. They are flattening the corporate structure.

Organizational analysis; can you expand a little? Thanks

There are many people, in middle management and individual contributors who could be eliminated and no one would know the difference. However, there are also middle managers who fill in and ultimately do the job of an individual contributor in addition to their manager responsibilities. The issue with the layoffs (in my opinion) is it doesn't seem focused on those who do nothing. Rather based on org chart analysis.
