Thread regarding Ally Financial Inc. layoffs

Afraid

Hey, um, I’m gonna try to stay as anonymous as I can, but I’m honestly really scared right now. I’m just a younger developer who managed to get my second job at Ally after working at another bank. I have some friends in CS, and they keep telling me that the job market is rough, especially for anyone below mid-senior roles. Honestly, I’m terrified that if there are any layoffs, I might not make it another round. The thought of losing my job is giving me so much anxiety, especially since I know if I do, it could take me 8+ months or more to find something else. I definitely don’t have the funds to survive that long without a paycheck.

I really like it here. It’s like my second home, and my coworkers feel like friends to me. I just don’t want to lose any more of them, or worse, end up without a job myself.

"As long as you’re not in Dan Lemonts org working on something useless like ATOM you should be good."

So Funny, but True. A lot of useless people work for his org.

Too many executive directors, directors for division...... These are like ceremonial positions, these guys know nothing and do nothing. Including Satish, had the pleasure to see what an id--t he is......

Roughly 10% of Ally's workforce has been eliminated in 15 months. It's not a great sign. Looking for work while you have work is always said to be most successful. Plus, according to a friend who owns a staffing agency (30+ years), changing companies is the only way to see any real increases in your salary. In the meantime, if you're young and still in a more junior role, you're probably making less and they'll let the more expensive people go first. Unfortunately, the workload get dumped on those who remain.

If you didn’t get laid off yesterday, you’re good until June. That’s when the next big round of any potential layoffs would be.

Do enough to not get fired, bulk up your emergency fund in case the worst happens, and keep your interview skills as sharp as possible.

If you discover you are on the wrong train, get off at the nearest station. The longer you wait, the more expensive it will be to get back on the correct path.

Rejection is redirection & Gods protection. You would most likely find an even better and higher paying job with great coworkers if you did have to leave. You’d have severance and your 401K. Not ideal, but you’d be okay.

For now all we can do is wait to see if the report is validated. If it is don't worry all your friends will be unemployed with you!

Save as much money as you can, always be applying while you still have a job, do enough to not get fired, but never give 100%.

It's the new norm, so don't be afraid or anxious but have a plan on what to do and how will you manage things , if it happens to you.

your first mistake was caring too much ally is a corporation not even the shareholders consider it a second home do your best work whatever happens happens as someone who has been around most of the time the grass is actually greener being friends with coworkers is a slippery slope and while its good to have a network try not to get attached trust me i have been in this game a long time you will be fine worse case the cs market is that bad you just go work in a different line of work
