Thread regarding Ford layoffs

You think start up EV companies are a ‘threat’? Get real.

Has a startup smartphone company put a dent in Apple or Samsung? Auto is an order of magnitude more complex than any smartphone when you consider complexity, supply chain, regulations, dealer network, manufacturing scale on and on.

Tesla is a bit of an anomaly but take away government subsidies and they’re another DeLorean. Chinese EVs will gain about as much traction as Chinese ICE have. A big battery and some big electric motors is about 5% of the big picture.

Has Harry’s razor put a dent in Gillette? Yeah Dyson ‘reinvented’ the vacuum but Bissell, Hoover and Eureka are alive and well.

I see DeWalt, Milwaukee and Makita all survived the Lithium revolution.

Get real.

Putting Ecoboost V6 engines in a full size pickup wasn’t innovative in 2013? An all aluminum truck body that shed 750 pounds with recyclable aluminum alloy in 2015 wasn’t innovative? How did the public receive those?

What did Ram, GM and Toyota innovate with their pickups from 2013 to present, a tailgate that opens like a Swiss arm kn--e? Amazing how haters can ignore history.

Yes we remember blackberry, the startup smartphone company that dinosaur legacy computer company Apple put out of business, yet, legacy ICE builder Ford is doomed because some unnamed startup EV companies are somehow hiding in the shadows that customers are going to line up with $60K to ‘take a chance on’?

If none of you have noticed it yet, Doug Field is restructuring Ford to be like a start up. Obtaining the best talent in big tech sectors and transforming the company to focus on digital mobility. It has been said many times already that this is the proper business model going forward. Ford will become the threat to the other legacy automotive companies and some non-automotive tech companies.

You are delusional. Since the beginning of time the landscape of business has been constantly changing, companies come and go. You think just because Ford has been around for a while they are entitled to surviving any significant revolution in the automotive realm? Ha. Tesla was just your first wake up call. Competition will show up, some companies will survive, some will not. It will really come down to how the market changes and how the companies respond.

I guess to put into your language.....remember blackberry? :)

EVs are a danger to human existence:

For the second time in a little more than a month, the fleet of golf carts at Sanibel Island's The Dunes Golf & Tennis Club caught on fire Friday.

Just like the first time it happened on Oct. 16, thick black smoke could be seen from miles way, rising above the golf course located on the northeast side of the island, not very far from the Sanibel Causeway.

PGA Club Professional Mike Dopslaff told The News-Press Friday night that the cause of the fire was likely what caused the carts to burst into flames four weeks ago — a chemical reaction between the cart's lithium batteries and the salt water residue left on the carts when the storm surge from Ian flooded the property on Sept 28.

"Nothing different about what happened (in October), just 39 (carts) this time, 71 of 72 now gone, ashes," Dopslaff said.

When the real competition starts Ford will lose market share quickly. Customers won't compromise on quality. Going out of business is a real possibility for Ford whether you like it or not.

OP,

Generally speaking, I agree with what you are saying. Even considering Tesla to be an anomaly with significant government subsidies. These startups likely won't make a dent into any of the established OEMs.

But I think the point is that these anomalies can happen. And it would be in Ford's best interest to always be leading, or at least in respectable positions, when it comes to quality, innovation, manufacturing, customer experience (vehicle and purchase experience). And right now, Ford is not even close in any of those categories.

Some little startup just may come along and be loved by the masses and kick Ford while we're down. I genuinely do not feel that our company is 'safe' from the competition.

I think our F150 sales were boosted by the Chicken Tax (you should look that up - interesting read) but now the competition is catching up. And what are we left with? Remember the 2015 Edge launch disaster? Remember the recent Explorer launch disaster? Remember eliminating all cars? The Mustang hasn't been profitable in years. We're left with all our eggs in the F150 basket - and the competition is ready to pass us. And the electric F150? Just read this site for comments on that performance, quality, and sales figures.

Look at how GM, Amazon, etc. reacted to Rivian when they first came out. That was another example of Ford being late to the party. Dare I say that Ford got lucky that Rivian has been struggling lately. They were absolutely in a position (at the beginning, anyway) to kick our butts in the electric SUV/Truck/Van segment. Ford got very lucky that they dropped the ball on manufacturing.

Lastly, to the person who said that this site is for complaining - and complaining about complaining - I with I had more that one upvote to give. Your comment is so funny and so true!

Who the f#k gives a s#t about Ford and EVs. It's a diversion to eliminate all the pension eligible white collar staff, eliminate the non ' Friends and Family ' staff, empire building for DF and eliminate threats to JF's rule. Heart breaking to witness many mentors eliminated, all over 50 with 20 plus years of exceptional loyal service with with documented achievements. 2023 is going to be a bloodbath. Farley makes Musk look like Mother Theresa. Hey Jimmy, if you need help, start with Ford Next, Renault applauded and laughed their butts off when the clown joined Ford, he's bled the company for a billion, good job!

No innovation, lol. Where have I heard that before, oh that’s right, Apple post Steve Jobs. I’ve made a literal fortune on ‘no longer innovative’ Apple since ‘bean counter’ Tim Cook took over!

Ford won't be able to make the transition as it exists now. Too many employees, too cumbersome, not enough innovation.
