In the US, you're lucky if you get 8 weeks severance. 2 weeks of that would probably be your normal 'notice', and they'd walk you out the door that day. Not that they need to WFR you anyway, in most states, they can just tell you your services are no longer required, walk you out the door, and pay you nothing beyond your normal paycheck.
It really gets bad when you realize that your health coverage is tied to your job - so now you have basically no health coverage either unless you pay for it yourself, and of course most of the time, they do not cover your health insurance for that 8 weeks, despite telling you for years that your health coverage is part of your total compensation.
And it's not unusual for you to be on a 'contract to hire' basis starting your next position, or there is a 90 day waiting period for benefits, so essentially you have no coverage for 3 months once you DO get something else...so even quitting and moving has issues.
I wish a lot more people over here had the slightest clue about just how much our 'freedom' really costs us.
