Thread regarding IBM layoffs

It's sad who gets promoted

I definitely intend to leave (if they don't show me the door in the meantime), because I'm sick of the general atmosphere here. Of all those who were promoted, only a few of them really deserved it.
The rest generally do not have the competence for their new positions, so how can we expect anything to improve here.

Every manager I’ve had, except the one who initially hired me, has zero knowledge of the domain they are “leading”. Project managers who don’t even know how to login to GitHub. How can you manage a project if you don’t even know what a repo is?

This is all caused by HR systems and how their leaders past and present structured the processes. Not pointng fingers at any individual HR staff. The way they've been managing IBM personnel has been less than industry standard, and leaving all promotional decisions and staff awards decisions to clueless management and executives.

100%! Just look at the promotions in the Data & AI labs.

@ccf - I've heard it expressed as: "It's not what you know, it's who you blow" ... and I certainly saw many a manager with Sore Jaws and "Lewinsky Lips" during my years at IBM. 😁

Yep. It's all about who you know and not how well you perform.
