The industry average for body shop type work is 8% on shore. Kyndryl made this point quite plainly when they were spun off. New IBM is aiming for a 15-20% average on shore content depending on the skill set. Legacy HW and SW are skewing towards the lower end, with strategic initiatives skewing toward the higher end.

"Your individual skills are not seen. Off shoring to India. "

Kinda in order
1st are legacy for maintenance only (5 year handcuffs)
2nd non strategic but not ready to sell yet - double risk if contractors
3rd Cheaper workers

Keep your eyes open as this happens to whom and which parts an make moves ahead.

Few go to 90pct offshore - found doesnt work as well as about 50pct - and only applies to item 3 above.

So Pay attention and be a go-to guy

"Tech" is overly broad to whine about a pay range. In what role is your Band 5 $75K? In my past company 10+ years ago we paid newhires that. But it was largely OS/FS work not say (overgeneralizing) Web Design work which Community and Colleges churned out and flooded the market with.

Lesson is keep abreast of markets and skills and make moves even if small.

As OS/FS Ive never had a problem with next job though review and study of current skills (Id atrophied with former company tech some - a risk!). And get well qualified solicitations frequently.

So look for current and esp newer skills and migrate towards them. Avoid legacy stuff unless high dollar contracts for migration and such.

Can be worth it if you have a family and can work a side huslte, I am a Band 8 and my PMR is just above 1.0 and work in a LCOL area 2 hours from the office. Combined I make competitive pay and happy for now. We are entering a recession and I think there will be good opportunities to make a move in 2023/2024.

@1ctq appears to be a typical old school mentality IBM manager. Oblivious to data driven modern world. Welcome to the 21st century!

Don’t go to the office. Don’t network. Remain unseen and unnoticed. Suffer the consequences.

Really?
The majority of people managers are not in the office and never have been.

I would quit. IBM is notorious for this kind of stuff. Obviously pay varies state by state with adjusted cost of living. I was actually in a similar situation as you were but I decided to leave the entire technology field all together. It was a great move for my overall health and family and now drive a truck making very good money. Anything is possible...just always stay positive!!!

Not sure your post is real. But didn’t you see it coming? Equal pay for everyone down to the lowest common denominator. Your individual skills are not seen. Off shoring to India.

"Band 5 making under 75k. Those numbers are way wrong or extremely misleading."

Yeah, you are getting screwed. My earlier numbers stand. I was making better than 75 K in 2008.

Band 5 making under 75k. Those numbers are way wrong or extremely misleading. I can sell shoes and make 75k. No raises last few years and bonuses are joke, especially when I deal with many large accounts. I just can't do it anymore. Leaving is my only option

Can you list your band and hourly rate ? Yearly rate with OT.

In 2019 a band 5 with just a little OT was making just over 100K without a degree.

And, it's not just the abysmal pay ... my colleagues and I left IBM after coming to the realization that we would get MORE Appreciation from Management and Job Satisfaction in roles where we cleaned up dog dirt from the sidewalks. IBM Management is among the Laziest, Most Clueless, and Incompetent we'd ever seen! 😏
