Thread regarding Ford layoffs

So, when is RTO happening?

A lot of talk at the town hall today discussing the need to cut costs. I wasn't with Ford pre-pandemic but know that a complete revisioning of the Dearborn campus was in the works.

I just joined Ford and don't live in Michigan. My desire to relocate has diminished due to recent reorganization events.

Curious what RTO plans have been mentioned?

I could never imagine going to Detroit or Dearborn for vacation. Somehow I think there would be very little tourism involved. Chicago? Sure. Detroit? Unlikely.

your convenience does not concern them. they have deal with local and state gvt to not make office building vacant, in order to attact investors and tourist, help retail and logistics. thats why michigan exempt millions of tax for them. RTO is inevitable.

Well, I was told I would have an office in the train station by now, but apparently it isn’t ready yet. Needs another $BILLION or two to get finished. Money we could have spend retraining employees.

Comparing WFH to RTO and relating it to welfare payments is hilarious. If people r more productive at home why would they go to the office? When you have people on the team who are fully remote and others going into the office, you are creating different expectations and experiences. Hybrid mtgs with some in the office and others on webex is a poor experience. It’s better to all be in the room or all be on webex.

Folks, RTO is a trend. Don't expect remote will be there forever.
Before pandemic 5 days in office and now only asking 2-3 days, and you still complaining?
It is like taking the government welfare checks and expecting to take forever...

If true, a great way to get attrition. I can’t see the need for me to go into the office to sit in webex mtgs. 1/3 of my team isn’t in the same state and the vendors aren’t either. Why should I have to spend my time driving to the office if they are talking the meeting fully remote? How is being in person more valuable for me vs fully remote folks? Would I have a better opportunity for advancement than the fully remote folks? Sounds like we would be creating two separate classes.

So you think the same rules apply to someone at the Director, or even more so, or the VP level as to you? I have news for you sweet summer child.

Both my director and VP sit on the west coast. How are they going to enforce that I drive to Dearborn every day when they aren't here? Not going to happen.

If people are ordered into the office and refuse, they can be terminated without waiting for a layoff. True at any company. I don't believe they will do that because remote work is here to stay! If Ford makes that policy, they will have even more problems hiring than because of the layoffs.

"I'm a new FCG who was told I could relocate MI but my manager said I could hold off when I first started. Are you saying they'll cut non-locals or only people who refuse to come in?"

Don't pay attention to these people here who claim to know who is going to be cut and why. They DONT KNOW. The selection criteria is secret because Ford does not want to risk getting sued. These people who claim to know, KNOW NOTHING.

"8000 is the magic number.....one way or another they will get to that number....there is not enough work for this many poeple as they have already staffed india, brazil and mexico to do the work.... it is not about ev it is about low cost workers"

Just like Motorola did, Ford will move both manufacturing and engineering offshore. Moto moved most of the above to India, China, Malaysia and Mexico.

Suggest you look at Ford personal management during 1998 by Nasser.
He said don't expect to retire from Ford. Expect 1 of every 3 employees to be terminated. If you didn't their "Package", during the next 2 years expect to havevuou performance downgraded and fired without any package.
Consider the present 8K salaried employment reduction currently in process before accepting any Ford offer of employment

The expectation would be cutting all (in the US) that aren't showing their bright cheerful faces in the fancy new HQ on a regular basis. Never mind that no-one is interested in hot desking three days a week on top of the wonderful commute that is metro Detroit. Also is the consideration that since GOOG has forced people back onto their campus they've been seeing a huge rise in covid cases among the employees. Pretty sure that all of this will, as is intended, increase natural attrition rates which will continue the reduction in workforce size without having to pay severance.

Lots of rumors swirling that Jimbo will announce a RTO similar to Tesla next month. Expectation is that you will be in the office at least 3 days a week. Those that can't/won't/don't will be part of the next round of SIRP.

If you are not local, within driving distance, good luck.
