My wife is an ex-sales manager (real estate & timeshares). From her stories, I conclude that the "rotten" component you refer to is, sales in general. Not the auto dealerships only. Any big-dollar commission based sales business seems to be that way.

Just to be clear, the dealers don't work for Ford. I believe they are franchises. They are privately owned and not managed by Ford. So if your experience was good, that credit goes to the owner of that dealership.
