Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Ford shaping itself into a startup culture original post @ 1pcx+1io481CP

Project Monarch (just float this name by an LL5 or above and see the reaction) has just completed the first phase. 8000 is the estimated number of heads to cut to get the margins to competitive levels. The company will now re-baseline, monitor the numbers coming out of Jira/Rally and cut more in 9 - 12 months. This will continue to happen moving forward. Ford is transitioning to a startup culture - internally competitive and cutthroat. There will be constant 'churn' at all levels as the people who can't keep up leave, or are let go, on a regular basis. Ford self-identified as a software company a few years ago and in doing so recognized the need to operate similarly to other software companies like Meta, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Netflix, etc...

"There will be constant 'churn' at all levels as the people who can't keep up leave, or are let go, on a regular basis."

This is bunk. Two time top achiever, just missed it a couple of other times (got extra bonus even though not a TA). Let go in August.

The cuts have nothing to do with whether you can keep up or not. Lots of dead weight kept while performers were let go.

Concur on Project Monarch. Heard referenced in a meeting regarding "OKRs". Person even said they could not type. Meanwhile as the State of Michigan wants to pass out money to the Big 3, Ford wants to move Jobs to Mexico and India.

This would be a great trick if Ford could pull it off; yes, this is typical of a start-up company and how they are run. However, few things stand in their way:

  • - High overhead/sunk/legacy costs...most start ups don't have those. You need experienced/seasoned people to know how to deal with these items
  • Vehicles, even BEV;s, are not just software. They are very complex and need to meet all sorts of requirements and regulations of 100's of countries. Again, you need good, solid, experienced people to deal with the complexity. Look what happened to Boeing and the 737 Max when they tried to outsource their development work and made assumptions about testing needed on a plane that kept the same wing and wing profile but attached larger engines to it....same thing is already happening to Ford, the progressively worse new product launches is proof.

If this is their plan, then the future doesn't look bright enough to wear shades. Just check out this article on TTAC; all the auto rushing headlong into BEV;s is making things worse: https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/cars/electric-vehicles/report-nobody-can-build-enough-electric-vehicles-44496969

This is like when Coca-Cola changed the soda formula in 1985 (after 100 years of success with the original formula). The new formula was a complete disaster. They tried to recover by modifying the formula again (back to the original) and changed the name to Coke Classic. It was too late. They had already lost many customers. The Coca-Cola disaster is detailed below:

At least WERS has a pretty front end! If you want a full-on freak out log into WIPS sometime (or ask your friendly buyer to show you) Full on 80’s black background green font mainframe program. Freaked me the F out the 1st time - thought I was having some kind of back to the future time traveler moment!

The irony of a company that runs on WERS trying to identify as a software company...

I have a hard time seeing how a cutthroat culture is something anyone willingly wants unless they’re a psychopath or making tons of cash. Maybe good for short-term productivity since everyone is paranoid and wants to perform so they don’t get cut? Long-term seems questionable…

Silicon Valley culture is cut throat and awful. People change jobs every 3 years. Companies fire people in mass all the time. The way things were is a much better environment.

You will be laid off by a robot, and that's nice.
After that, you will treat your robot wife to dinner and a downloaded movie - her name is Alexa.
