Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Not being able return to Ford

What's the point of this? This has never been a part of layoffs before, as far as I can tell. I know a few folks who were laid off years ago but later returned in different roles. What's changed that suddenly they have to put a stipulation that nobody who is laid off can ever get a job at Ford again in the severance package? Unless I misunderstood something and that's not the case?

I retired in April. Not part of the head count reduction, but because it was the right time for me. I have zero desire to work at Ford again. After nearly 30 years of it I’m happy and don’t need Ford drama in my life.

GM use to buy out direct employees, and then we would see them weeks later as contract, making the same or more. All that sweet cash just to change status and availability of being let go at a moments notice.

IDK why that's in there. But I know that even if it wasn't, in never come back!

ok, so companies do this as many of you state. That still does not answer the question WHY? What's in it for them to never allow you to come back just because of being laid off when people who quit can come back. What is the reason? I suspect nobody knows here but wants to "look smart" so you all dance around the question and give tangent answers like stating that "its always been there".

@ejj+1inGq02O is correct.
That language has always been there. It relates to the severance. If you don't sign the waiver, you pass up the severance package.
But if they want you back, it can happen, regardless of waivers.

Scare tactic. You can come back as agency...but do u really want to do that to yourself?

Those that returned to Ford is because they can’t get another job somewhere else. They can get a job at Ford through the buddy system.

It has been like this for the past 30 years.

It’s who you know, not what you know to get the job at Ford. Sadly, this is why the company can never compete with other companies. Ford is always 5 years behind the competition.

I was fired in April and there was nothing preventing me from coming back IF I didn’t sign the waiver.

The waiver included both a ‘never work for Ford again’ and a ‘won’t work for an agency doing Ford work’ clause. I needed the medical/dental continuation and wanted to avoid the COBRA route at that time, so I signed.

I’ve since heard of someone who was let go in April, signed the waiver, and has already returned to Ford less than four months later (as agency)! I would think that individual is running the risk of having their insurance canceled, though I seriously doubt that Ford would try to sue them to get the money back.

It was in the package I took in 2020 and heard it was in others offered at least a few years before. I agree that there must be way around the restriction as some people have come back as consultant or agency. Possible the exceptions are rare and it's in there to discourage frequently happening

I know of two people who were let go in 2009 who came back as agency and were later hired as Ford salary. One of them was as nice as could be but couldn’t figure out anything for themself and had trouble understanding when others explained it. I have also known others who came back as agency but weren’t hired. I think it took an act of congress and a letter from the pope to get these approved.

No idea why but that language has been there forever. Tons of people who took packages in 2008 came back. Usually contract, not aware if any were rehired. If they want you, you can come back.

@qna+1inGq02O. What does nothing new have to do with the OP's question?

I wonder as well. What is the point of Ford doing that? If someone wanted to come back as a contract person to work for someone who knows them, and what they can do, why is this a bad thing for Ford? When the all EV pipe dream ends there may be a need for ICE folks to keep the company alive.

And for me I don't care. I am never working at Ford or anything automotive related again. I am now retired as of Monday and the only place I will be working is Lowe's or a local golf course near you. But more likely just shopping at Lowe's and playing golf.
