Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Not everything is so black

I know several people who are not at all unhappy about being laid off. Moreover, they even hoped for it and longed for the package -- How many more like that are among those affected?

FIrst, let me say that I sympathize with all of those who lost their job and are struggling to cope. I am one of those people that really wanted the involuntary separation. I have over 20 years, over 55, and have been making contributions to my pension.

I ran the numbers and staying a few extra years did not result in a significant increase. A number of peers I know were released and I have reached out to give them the support they need.

Like other pensioners, I didn't want to take the risk of a lump sump payout in 2023 (or beyond), so I decided months ago that I would not work past 11/30/22. I also wanted to get a nice severance package before I left. I didn't want to submit my retirement papers because I was concerned that they will not consider me for the involuntary separation.

Given my current work situation, I was the ideal candidate and I was picked. The manager that gave me the news was visibly upset, but I was unemotional. Little did she know that I was bursting with happiness. I received 9 months severance, 9 months for some of the insurances, and am taking a lump sum pension distribution prior to the rates increasing. I can take my time and decide if I want to continue working. I've already got line-of-site to another job in a field that I really enjoy.

Yes, some of us hoped and longed for the package.

The risk vs benefits for someone with over 30 years to stay beyond November just aren't worth it. The only thing bad about getting let go was being immediately locked out. But given 9 months pay, health benefits, and a favorable pension lump sum, I will take the sudden 15 minute webex retirement party.

I waited around for the trainwreck expecting it would be me. I had started looking but was waiting to see if I got a package so Ford could pay me to find a new job.

So it all worked out. I'd rather get paid to go away than to go away for free!
