Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Bought a Ford today. Thought I would share a story.

Life has a way of offering opportunities when you least expect it. In fact it's kind of how we've done extremely well in life, by jumping on opportunities when they present themselves - and often never finding them when we seek them out. As a lifetime automotive designer spanning all three makers, I'm very familiar with GM, Ford, FCA/Dodge products. We just happen to be a Ford/Dodge household, ironically my spouse and I like both, usually purchase both relatively evenly, but we playfully side with one over another, all in good fun.

There's no way to make a long story short and give all the details, but today, we added another "diamond in the rough" Ford vehicle to our household lineup. It makes for two "diamond in the roughs" this year, oddly enough. It will make for our fifth Ford vehicle in the household, fantastic condition for all of them - and one (1) dodge. Talk about the odd man out, meme five Fords, sitting along one Dodge Durango (2007) with an unhappy face on it's bumper. But truth be told, we use to be about 50/50, it got our family through life, and kids, and all of these vehicles are well built. The Durango is low miles and solid, enough to put my kid through for the next 10 years easily. Upgrades happen, and everyone moves on to a better vehicles. We pick up our newest member tomorrow. Everything, no matter the make, is recyclable and replaceable if the numbers work, and the conditions right.

So, why this story? Doom and gloom is always in the headlines. Ford, FCA/Stellantis, GM, there really not all that different. Different models can offer differing results, but in the end, we're all after a product that can do well by our own family. To get those kids through life, and give us parents the enjoyment to know, yeah we did alright. And, maybe we have some fun along the way.

So tomorrow, we pick up a 27k mileage explorer "diamond in the rough", priced about 5k or more below market. Right place at the right time, for the less than market value price, it was stupidly obvious to purchase it since we were upgrading a vehicle anyways.
The indirect action and secondary motive, was to upgrade our youngest with a reliable hand me down, the lone dodge. So, what was the initial intended upgrade? Dodge journey or Durango, but the conditions said nope. Three attempts, three strike outs with dealers. Oddities in the situation. Stuff just going wrong that shouldn't go wrong - there's your sign. When something reveals itself, and you know it works, sometimes it's best to jump on it. When the numbers work, they work. When there's a jive, it works.

In the end, forget the noise, and the political nonsense. Layoffs, fear, the politics, it's all just a fling among ALL automakers - and then it goes away. Layoffs do happen, and one door closes. One or more doors open in it's place, often time for the better. But, your family unit, and what you push to create and evolve, is really ALL that matters. It's the last thing standing at the end of the day. It's the only constant.

Hang your hat on improving your family wellbeing.

No more Fords for me. I’m so stressed out. I hate this.

Last I checked, the negatives multiplied like no one's business. Maybe the negatives were rigged. Have you ever thought about that? Original poster does have a point. We have a bunch of p*ssies on this board.

Karma in life takes you exactly where it intends. Obviously he's doing so much better than you people. Even with all their self professed layoffs. What are you people doing then?

When I checked this post yesterday, it had a score of like net -38. Now it is net 0 (+42/-42). That means somebody (likely the Op) literally clicked + on it 40 times lol. He must really be proud of his 27k miles used Explorer. Maybe he should reach out to Jimmy Boy, he would be perfect Ford C-level material!

Ford vehicle successfully delivered. Sits next to the other Ford vehicles that successfully didn't catch on fire, blow up, or break down over the last decade or more.

Now, could all that occur? Yes it could. It could be part of that tiny fraction of a percent, kind of like the fine folks that that were eliminated recently. That so very tiny percent of the 1XX,X-X employees still working at Ford. So small, so tiny, the odds of elimination are like winning the lottery in a bad way. Maybe it's just best to go and buy a lotto ticket.

You people think you're the only ones that have gone through this sh*t in the automotive field? I've been through dozens of layoffs across a career through no fault of the employee. Just another company doing shareholder bidding, ki----g peoples hopes and dreams periodically. Strong people make for strong opportunity. Weak people, well, you get the idea. Instead of the poor me card, and I hate the company, go play the "I'm not going to be subjected to caring about the automotive layoff BS anymore", and actually do something about it. You will pull much more out of life.

You should have seen this coming. I mean really, you all didn't just get kicked blindsided in the nuts did you? This is how automotive rolls. It's been crystal clear among the OEMs and the tier one and twos for decades. Lessons in life are expensive. The really good ones, very. Learn the lesson and come back stronger next time.

Most of the employees who didn’t get a company car bought Japanese cars. This is a result of that.

I don't think I'll be able to buy another Ford / Lincoln vehicle again...

I'm not commenting on the cost/quality/etc. I just genuinely feel so let down and cast out by Ford that I wouldn't be comfortable buying one again.

I drive a Lincoln now. I'll keep it until I land on my feet somewhere. But then I think I'll trade it in for another OEM vehicle.

To Op, I hope writing that story helped you out somehow. I don't see why anyone reading a Layoff site in the midst of a big cut cares about your purchase decisions, but good for you.

It does make you wonder who is the bigger fool. The ones that worked at Ford, being told to support the company and to buy their vehicles, only to figure out corporate loyalty died decades ago. Oh wait, GM and FCA do this too.

Isn’t GM about due for another mass layoff? 2019 was so three years ago. Then, everyone can all be in good company together.

IDK if "stupidly obvious" to purchase an Explorer, at any price.
Last gen has many many suspension recalls ( and re-recalls) and lots of AWDs Ford have PTU issues. Current gen cannot place higher than 8th on any comparison test list and consensus is it is average at best with cheap interiors and poor value. Pricey. I am not bashing Ford but really what is going on when an all new huge investment product gets crushed by the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade?

That's right. Human resources. Contract, and expendable. It's the sad reality of everything automotive. GM is the world leader in that arena, and while it seems like the Ford people are relatively newer to this concept, give it time.

The best lesson someone ever gave me was the moment you start working for these three automakers, build up a "layoff nest egg". Never touch it until that eventual layoff. Not if, but when.

Sorry for your situation agency guy/gal. I hope you realize the usage of agency by Ford or anyone is to be able to cut spending/costs quickly with no warning or allegiance, as agency is considered a commodity and others can take over.

Fire certainly sounds like an electric vehicle problem. Poster didn't state year, yet so many are certain to believe they fall into this specific category. (A-s)umption doesn't look good on people. Well, maybe some people a-s does look good...

I don't get the story, it is long though.
Agree recent poster total cost of ownership- numbers rarely in Ford's favor.
Young and gung ho I bought all Fords for 30 years. Many problems, lots of costs, expensive repairs for those I could not do myself.
The winners will be those that provide best total cost of ownership. For the same cost, if not less, if I had bought 2 Hondas instead of a Ford van I would have 2 running cars instead of one blown up with 4 transmissions and rusted to the beltline now sitting in the junk yard.
Along the way I also bought a used BMW, Kia, and GM Saturn. All of these did better than my Fords. Ford needs to get a handle on better quality products, they will not make it selling nostalgic Broncos and Mustangs/derivatives. Customers deserve better.

Total cost of living in a cardboard box is nil, yet I still don't see many people making that choice either. Or, riding a bike at the cost of vehicle ownership.

Sometimes, you just have to spend a little for sh*t that just don't make sense.

If you spend your time properly to look into the total cost of ownership, you will conclude only fool would buy Ford/GM/Chrysler vehicles.

Pretty safe bet that assumption is wrong by a long shot, meaning OP will be just fine.

So about the layoff thing. First time? You know what they say about soft people in life.

Thanks OP, for a ray of sunshine in this scary week for Ford and Ford agency folks. It is indeed tragic for all those losing their jobs. But for those of us who love our cars and trucks - whatever the make - there’s still that tingle and thrill, of bringing one home the first time - whether new or used, Ford or not Ford. And like that, is the feeling of landing a new job. Here’s to hoping, all those going thru trauma this week, will soon feel the amazing thrill again.

Now let me tell you a story.

I have been hired a couple of years ago via an agency and was informed that I would have to be relocated to the office as soon as I sign the offer. I had to buy an AWD for Michigan weather and then had to spend more money on a new apartment. No expenses covered by employer.

I have worked really hard to gain my manager’s trust and was successful in every task assigned. I received two recognitions since joining. One of the recognitions was just a couple of months ago. Manager mentioned that I would be a great resource for the team. Colleagues informed me that the Manager has been thinking about offering a full time position since a few weeks.

With the tasks planned for Monday, I logged in and started working on stuff and delivered most of it by mid day as I prefer using my afternoon and evening for meetings and statuses. After a lunch break, laptop seems to be inaccessible. My phone had a missed call from my agency. I give them a call back and they said that I would be contacted shortly. Now, my phone shows notifications that my Samsung is having trouble connecting with work mail and webex. For those of you wondering I should have guessed, I generally read news only after office hours. Also, I felt that my hard work talks for me and I was safer than most people. Another phone call and I answered. As you might have guessed by now, I was asked to bring my work equipment to the agency office immediately.

Now, Imagine how I feel about seeing a Ford logo on my steering as soon as I drop off my laptop and have to see everyday and relieve the moment for the next few weeks. Even if I do find a job, the was that things happened will definitely keep me away from that logo for a very long time.

I hope it's not AWD with problematic PTU -- $2k to replace

I hope hope it's not the 3.7l that has the internal water pump requiring 14 hours of labor to replace (another $2k). If the bearing on the water pump fails the pressurized coolant turns the oil into a milk shake destroying a good engine.

All of this is from personal experience

Don't have to motivate. Opportunity will provide, and those that capture it, will do well. Those that understand the diamond in the rough situation, will accomplish the same.

I understand some of the limitations of this story. Why does someone have six excellent vehicles, and wants to tell me this story. The truth is I have eight, and I'm downsizing to six, and then to five. Not like us right? You would be surprised how many of your peers have millions in the bank - and do, exactly what you do. Millions. I am not one of those, but I know many of those.

What's the difference? They capitalize on what you can not see. Learn, and replicate, or don't. At the end of the day, it's not about the bank account. It's about capitalizing on the opportunities in life.
