Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Automotive Careers

Young guys think twice before doing engineering and think three times before working in Automotive.
I am 39 and already have plans to leave. I am already not looking to grow in this trash field.
I did 12 years of school (BS,MS,PHD) and best in what I do.
What is the point no feature....
STOP investing in STEM if we just going to outsource!!!

Unfair to compare to the Japanese. Those folks force their employees to work "voluntary" 13-hour days. If that's what you want... Same with China. One would have to restrict market access to the US and Europe. Sooner or later, for you to compete against them, you will have to become like them.

When everything was managed by US based workers the company still lost their way and got beat by Japanese on efficiency and quality. Have not figured it out in 40+ years, and recalls probably worse now, so why should it be expected to change? The culture clearly is not working no matter who gets in charge. Everyone says they know how to fix things but never happens. It's been hard to watch year after year

@vrb exactly Ford use to value good engineers, now they value MBA and marketing (all hat no cattle types). Now they hire and retain 4th tier talent instead of 1st tier talent. Results are readily apparent.

When I started at Ford as a MSMechanical Engineer back in the day it was almost impossible to get in unless you went to a top notch school with a 3.6 or more GPA. We did real engineering and where held responsible for our work. Once e-mail and webx mtgs where invented along with cell phones …no longer could you actually do anything. Everything became a committee from the top down and we became paralyzed by mtgs, process, Touch point discussions.

I could not take it anymore; I left and now work teaching and I’m now responsible for my decisions and work again

If I had to do it now; I’d go with smaller companies not in automotive; perhaps medical, etc The issue with Ford now is they tie the hands of their best employees and the not as talented people just get lost in the process not in charge or responsible
For anything (ie; contract, Mexico, India, )

@sbl Bingo! I've been saying the same thing for years. And even for those that can, we can also include boycotts of a former company. I've lost track of how many people on this forum, after being unceremoniously dumped at the curb like trash, have come out and said they will never buy a Ford product again.

Companies don't realize the long term damage they are actually doing to their companies by outsourcing American jobs in the name of profits. If they don't have loyalty to America and their workers, then why should we have loyalty to them?

Exactly. Not even sure who these companies think will be able to purchase their products in the US if all the jobs both white and blue collar are shipped overseas.
