Hoc's list for the chopping block

See here for rough distribution of employee headcount by job functions in tech companies. We can use this as a rough estimate for VMware as well.
https://carta.com/blog/compensation-report-h1-2022/

Engineering (25%)+ Sales (12%) + Operations (8%) + Customer Success (7%) make up nearly 50% of the headcount. So if Hoc wants to hit the 70% cut, you can imagine where the biggest numbers will be. Engineering is not immune and will get hit severely. Sales and Customer Success can be easy pickings for 20%. They might get wiped out almost completely. Operations will be reduced to 1-2%. Engineering might come down to 10% after Hoc ruthlessly cuts the Tanzu and other wastelands.

Think I'm crazy. We'll find out when the numbers hit the news post November.

Following suite from previous acquisitions (Symantec & CA) the first groups to go were HR, People teams - think internal culture staff, internal training teams and non revenue generating teams. R&D gone. Professional services were shipped to HCL and Tata consulting services. Support took a massive hit with teams being sold to HCL. Middle & team managers who didn’t find a home or take one of their employees’ role got the axe. Customer success managers who were not on a paid-for contract role were cut after a year. With your manager gone, there is no one to protect you. Those with intern/junior/ associate levels were always the first on the chopping block. Hock was open in town halls that he is not interested in interns or recent college grads. The single redeeming quality was the RSUs that came with an offer letter. You’re going to want those because you will be miserable. Want a Taco Tuesday party or a team meeting offsite … well enjoy spending your own personal $ because they provide ZERO in budget with the reasoning “we pay you well, spend what we give you.” Hope this helps some. Things could be different given the size of VMware. If you do not generate revenue, you’re in danger.

Customer Success is on life support anyway after Agarwal and Dhawan comprehensively screwed it up.

Will be a mixed bag of divestiture and layoffs. question now is what businesses are actively being shipped around? core, olde sheet, and you know what that is...prevails at some level.

Customer Success is definitely gone. Hock could care less about his customers succeeding.

The government stated, we are not in recession. Unemployment is at 50 years low at 3.5%. Think about it, only 3.5% of people temporarily out of jobs. Inflation Reduction Act signed and economy should do even better. Unemployment might hit 1% ? Companies should start hiring or retaining people as the market is low on talents. No one should be worrying about anything, in fact, you will be spammed by recruiters wanting to poach you. The magic of numbers and statistics vs reality.
