Thread regarding Capital One layoffs

Is this company different than others?

As a potential employee reading through these posts one has to wonder if this site just attracts the disgruntled. Could a big company like Capital One really be so dysfunctional? Are the surveys all wrong that this company is one of the best places to work in the country? Is Capital One really that much different than other companies? Just curious because reading some of these posts sure makes it sound like a mistake to consider a career or even a job. The majority of the posts really seem to paint a picture of a company that is not a great place to work. Is it really that much different than other companies of this size?

I agree. Managers are condescending and once you speak up about it, they will target you. Many managers don't lead by example and know how to play the game.

I’ve been on two different teams on first line and second line. Both areas of the business were completely the same with regard to mediocre management and lack of leadership. How do? I believe C1
does not train their leaders to lead or managers to manage. Many senior leaders come in off the street without coming up through the ranks. Then they cycle out to new jobs within a few years to other big banks. The leaders who have been there 20+ years know how to play the game and are equally if not more drinking their own Kool-aid than the ones that left.

As far as “best places to work” surveys, those are artificial and targeted. There wasn’t a week that went by where the comms team wasn’t pumping out emails suggesting everyone fill out yet another survey.

People ki-l themselves to get into the company, see it for what it is, then punch out after 1-3 years. It’s on their resume and they build from there. C1 painfully claims to be a tech company, but is nowhere near. They could use a lot of help from some natural born leaders, maybe even those from the military, to come in there and build real teams, cohesion, and processes. It’s a shame. Could have been a great place to work.

It was my worst job, thus far. I hated every minute of it.
They protect bullying managers. You listen to these conference calls, and they say they don't tolerate such behavior from anyone, no matter who they are. If you report it, you're out.
Managers are condescending. They speak to you any kind of way they want. Horrible environment.
Employees aren't engaging, either. They walk around with their noses in their laptops.
Everyone has their own experiences. I was proud to join, at first, but regretted it very quickly.
