Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

D-mb Technicians at AT&T

Since some of you continue to bash the management side so hard on this board, I thought I’d spin it the other way and gripe about the union a little bit.

  1. Why do we pay union techs the absurd wage we do for them to be so ignorant using computers. I mean, is it too much to ask that they know how to capture and post a screenshot or turn a network adapter on/off? Or perhaps maybe have some basic typing skills? I mean, they can’t actually perform their jobs at all without using PC’s in Mobility, DEG, CO, Business, LNS…..
  1. Is it asking too much that they treat company property (vehicles, tools, test sets, PC’s, phones, plugins, etc) with at least some respect?
  1. Is it asking too much that they keep their vehicle and/or office space at least somewhat tidy? I mean some of these work spaces look downright disgusting. Like a bunch of pigs living in a trailer. I know they are technicians and all, but some basic housekeeping at a professional level would be great.
  1. I keep reading posts about how managers need to know all about what techs do. Maybe we should have techs learn about everything involved with management/leadership and call it even……Just a thought.
  1. Those “technicians” that are actually really great at there jobs are few and far between. The rest are absolute trash, but get paid the same and have the same benefits. Kinda the same thing you find in lower/line level management. Those techs posting nasty comments about management on this board should be cognizant of that.

this was a garbage post. No good points. This shows why more management can be cut and nobody would notice.

We technicians do the work and make communication work. We are smart and important.

Rage….What rage? I don’t see anything in the OP’s post that could be consider rage. Rampage….What rampage? Sounds like the union folks want the right to complain and make up whatever statements (amusingly fictional) they wish about management, but when that’s turned around, they get offended instantly. The funny thing is that they don’t even deny the OP’s observations/statements. They just belt out excuses one after another.

Did the bad man hurt you O.P.??

You state "Maybe we should have techs learn about everything involved with management/leadership and call it even……"

First of all, there is no leadership at the management level you are referring to.

When techs start supervising managers, and start having to turn in actual appraisals and observations on their manager, and actually have disciplinary powers over the managers, THEN techs should learn everything involved with management..

BECAUSE, how can you give accurate appraisals and leadership without being expert in the job you are observing... YOU CAN'T !!

Your very post suggested that someone is not qualified to critique a job without knowing "everything involved with" the job you are supervising/appraising...

The O.P. on this one is obviously a college hire, straight into management, Id10t...

I have been on both sides of this fence. I do miss the good ol days of being a Telephone man and working trouble, it was a great job back then. My truck was always spotless and I took great pride in my work.
Regarding folks being slobs or laying down on the job not doing anything, trust me this happens on both the management and technician side. Some people just don’t give a sh-t and that likely will never change. These folks are what they are, and are usually the complainers of the group as well. Don’t worry those of us who DO give a sh-t will carry you like always. If this post makes you mad then you know where you fit. Get it?

“If the service is on copper, the company doesn't care much anymore. The CO has a tech for about 5 offices during the day, after hours that ratio goes to about one tech to 20 offices. Not the fault of the techs.”

The company still cares enough about copper to send Specials out at night. And yes, CO staffs are slim after hours, no sh-t Sherlock,
& anyone with half a brain knows it’s not the techs fault.

Special services is about the only group routinely going out “all hours of the night”. If they’re lucky they can get a CO tech called in for an assist ticket. DEG isn’t coming out even if the RT is on fire. If a Construction manager can be found, he might be able to round up a crew to come put a damaged fiber back together. Cable/Services/Prem/Wire techs ain’t coming out.

Those who can do, work.
Those that can not do , manage.
Not everyone is tough enough to work outside...so best you stay in your lane.
And look forward to you cr@p benifits.
You sound jealous.

You got it all wrong. We pay them to FIX THE TROUBLE in all types of weather and all hours of the day or night. They are not housekeeping or computer nerds. Repairmen come in all types. We need them.
