Thread regarding Capital One layoffs

wrongful promotions and corruption

Their is a documented rule if you are new you can't be promoted unless you've been there for 2 years. Also, you can't do skip level promotions, ie, skip a level even if you're justified.

So the corrupted SOBs got around that by promoting their friends who've only been there for 1 year and also giving them 2 promotions in 1 year. Blatantly throwing caution to the wind.

An employee with 2 years experience and one with 25 years experience with also a master's degree are at the same pay grade level.

ENTIRE ORGANIZATION IS UPSIDE DOWN. EMPLOYEES WITH NO EXPERIENCE ARE GIVEN PROMOTIONS OR LEADERSHIP ROLES WITHOUT THE MINIMUM EXPERIENCE.

VERY DISCRIMINATORY.

While I think capital one is a great company to gain experience with in early career, it may not be for someone that doesn’t play the politics game that wants to be in upper management long term. It tends to be difficult to promote unless you know someone that knows someone.

I’ve literally seen promotions handed to people that leadership wanted to have. The job posting for promotion is opened just long enough for the person to apply and then closed out. No real interview was done and raise/offer was accepted for sr role doing the same work.

Speaking of, there’s a certain LOB that has 3 different job levels in commercial card that the associated are all doing the same work but paid at 3 different levels associate, principal associate, and sr associate. While the higher two positions get paid a monthly bonus/incentive and the first doesn’t. Mind you, while you the EXACT same work.

"There are people who are head of software engineering without any prior software development experience. Ouch. "

Yup.

A lot of folks from product or project management background move on to those roles by their capability to sucking up to their bosses and playing backstabbing games. Once they get into these roles they perpetuate the cycle of promoting suck ups who play the same game.

If you want to be respected for your tech skills and actually grow your skills - move on to a startup or one of the real FAANGs.

It sounds like networking and sucking up to the boss and those above is a way to enhance your chances of being successful and moving up. This is status quo in most corporations. While it is rather nauseating to watch, it is the way of the world. Be visible, stroke the egos of those who can help you move along, try to differentiate yourself any way you can to prove you are better than those who work with you. That is the standard recipe for 'success' almost anywhere.

There is still a lot of attrition across all teams. It just gets worse. There is no room for growth unless you're friends with your bosses.

They claim to be a technology company, but remember...they're still a bank. Their HR policies are those of a bank, not of a technology company. They are rapidly falling behind from cyber, to HR, to risk management, to security. Their leaders, who have been there for decades, are too atrophied to understand how to make course-corrections or they've never worked anywhere but Capital One.

NOTHING HAS CHANGED SINCE THEY GOT HACKED IN 2019. THEIR TECHNOLOGY TEAMS ARE VERY POOR QUALITY AND UNQUALIFIED.
