Thread regarding DXC Technology layoffs

The Walking Dead

My entire department was laid off except our director, me and our director’s assistant who only supports our director. We went from 15 people to 3 people. There’s no plan for how the work will get done. They haven’t rolled out any directives, new organization or plan. I am shocked by the level of disengagement senior management has and panicked…how am I supposed to cover for this.

Two months before this our CMO just disappeared, one day she was here and the next gone. No one has said anything about where she went. Before that our other CMO also disappeared. The only way we knew she was leaving is I was accidentally cced on her box shipment pick up email.

It’s like end of days here. No one knows anything and everyone is afraid.

Do not worry about how to get the work done. Senior leaders do not care, as evidenced by the action. That means the work is going away. The last people there are only retained to close out the work and turn off the lights. Work on your resume and apply to jobs.

The CMO was an easy target. Square peg in a round ho-e. Really hard working humble lady, but I guess the diversity and culture touting exec's got her out. Definitely she is not paid in Millions like the bagel-brandy-steak crowd.

CMO. Chief Marketing Officer. An old title from the days of large enterprises with money to burn making pretty brands and raising awareness to drive demand to grow the business. A bit like an external PR firm.

But they were never accountable as there was not always a tangible link with the work they did - mostly tying balloons to the backs of conference chairs - and real business growth affecting the bottom line, which is why they fell out of fashion and favour - because they became associated with expense for not much gain.

The modern equivalent I suppose would be a Chief Digital Officer or Chief Growth Officer roles, certainly those with much more focus on the customer experience (CX) and having much more focus on business outcomes, growth and anticipating what lies ahead. So, such roles today would need to be experts on your customer's business and their behaviours, and buying trends, which will mean leaving the office, going outside and talking to them.

Expecting any future lifetime value (LTV) and not just a quick buck for the Shareholders, will be difficult. Getting new customers on board can be costly and let's face it, keeping them on board hasn't exactly been DXC's forte.

This happened to me on a client project.

On Friday, there were 15 of us working on a project that was part of a much larger programme (c.200 people) for a long-standing client.

On Monday, 2 of us turned up on site. No-one had told me that this was happening, my remaining colleague didn't know either. I tried to contact the Programme Lead to see what was happening - her phone was disconnected by WFR.

In all, of the 200 people on the programme, over 60 had been laid-off.

DXC lost the client, and the profits that went with it.

I thought that maybe they'd learn the lesson eventually, but obviously not yet

Sorry to hear this. I left DXC years ago, but the reductions have always been indiscriminate and whilst there used to time for difficult discussions and elements of continuity planning in the early days of DXC, it soon degenerated into complete lack of planning, lack of communication (even after the deed is done) and an unwillingness to inform the affected clients. Just unprofessional conduct that allows the clients to find out for themselves.

Unfortunately, you may find yourself stretched in many different directions. Do not, repeat do not do not allow yourself to become stretched and work silly hours to cover the huge capacity gap. There is being professional and there is being stupid. I was stupid and I can tell you, that continuing to balance many plates affects your own mental well being and brushes off on your family. Be fair to yourself and make plans to leave.

I am now much happier in work now, but this site continues for me as a frightening reminder of what it was like to work for a firm on the decline and a leadership that simply can not lead a growth agenda and demonstrate utter contempt for its number one asset: staff.
