Subsurface Chiefs are at first level supervisor level, not a strong endorsement of their worth from the company. Steadily demoted the last decade. Are these vanity positions, anachronistic empty titles?

He was both technically and ethically challenged. So no loss to the company there.
Some chiefs don’t even qualify for the title. But who cares if you really earned that degree?
On that note, that Stanford boy needs to calm down a bit.
Time for some of the chief REs to take an early retirement
"nobody's gonna know"
The chiefs don’t know as much as they think they do. Their role has evolved over the years from helping a project along with knowledge and expertise to simply being a contrarian who’s brought in during the final stages of a project to throw monkey wrenches into the world and play devil’s advocate. The latest crop have been especially vacuous and belligerent. Those roles should have been done away with a decade or more ago.
On another note, as prior poster said, geoscience is not valued at this company anymore. It’s engineering and hopes and prayers all ‘round. Good luck to us all.
I am not in that world, but makes sense given the direction we have gone in past 3 years. Not sure I agree with it given that we are an oil company that needs to retain knowledge of subsurface
Geoscience as a function is anachronistic in this company.
