Unless a certain someone has a change of heart, a lot more people are getting let go Thursday and Friday.

I don’t think they lay people off on Friday, directors find out early in the week and deliver news by Thursday.
They can and they have.
Can they do this and get away with it?
A little more information would be greatly appreciated on the orgs/teams impacted.
Which teams are being let go?
That is the plan, happy for them.
Which organization?
Good, these folks lives will be bad for a minute but then they will look back at the layoff as being a positive.
