I'm sorry if this sounds insensitive but I was hoping to be cut and get my well-deserved severance. The fact that I am still here means not only that I didn't get what I wanted but that somebody who needed their job and was hoping to keep it unnecessarily lost it. Can somebody please explain to me why we can't have voluntary buyouts?

I’m going to continue to hide and cruise. Made it through another one!

"You don’t deserve a severance."
Just like the people who said no to the useless jab, and have been proven 100% correct.
From my initial response written "Its not insensitive (just plan and ask):" post. You may have posted "So from the gist of it it’s okay to ask to be let go?" Answer: It is okay as long as you can time everything up to maximize any future packages that may be offered with having a new job opportunity that you are being offered. I told the hiring company HR to delay my start date for 3 months and they came back with "okay" after checking with the hiring manager. I was honest in telling the company I was going to that I want to leave by volunteering to maximize my pay, benefits. Again, the conversation with your current supervisor/manager has to be open and honest. I agree with some comments that you cannot trust leadership. If your boss is "open" with you and you feel comfortable and have a place to land then go for it. It is sad that some leaders are untrusted, not informing their teams because people need to know and need to find a soft landing elsewhere vs. stress on their next career move. If you don't trust expect to be in the round without choice, or minimal raise, or minimal performance review ratings because they know you want to leave. Always have a plan, make sure you have trust with your 1st level leadership before speaking up. Never leave any money on the table when you go if it can be done. IF it cannot be timed, grass is not always greener, but finding a soft landing before another round comes up is much easier than "unexpected cut". I could never work with a leader that is not trustworthy, micro-manage, uninformed, worry for themselves only and not the team and the list goes on. If that is your current culture you work in, the grass may be greener.
So from the gist of it it’s okay to ask to be let go?
Quit complaining. No one owes you anything.
Wireless leaders don't have enough respect for their employees to ask for volunteer layoffs. Heck they don't have enough respect for their managers to let them talk to the people being laid off.
Its not insensitive (just plan and ask): This should have been a conversation with your direct manager/supervisor. I am a 2015 "volunteer" and knew there would be future layoffs (typical). I had a conversation with my boss and asked when a layoff comes up again rather than sacrifice a team member to simply choose me. I communicated I was ready. This is also like a game of "deal or no deal", while you "wait" the packages get worse. Yes I gloat and say I had a job offer for more money on way out and my voluntary separation kicked in aka volunteer layoff. This is 10K to volunteer, 1 year pay, 6 weeks PTO paid bulk, while earning a new salary (heck ya, thats a break). No disrespect intended as I worked there 25 years, highly dedicated, internal awards (yearly, quarterly etc) and my own self was telling me time to go. Plan it, communicate it before packages (if any) are even left. I must add I even had a retirement settlement; I took that offer and ran and my health, mind spirit is much better then "wondering"...talk about it with you significant other if it applies to you as insurance is important, paychecks etc. Nobody should sell themselves short, do what you think is best. People should not call people trash, merely wish them well, move forward and take care of your career path. Grow in the company or leave if it is not a good culture, good pay, good benefits etc. It's all up to you.
Did you even ask? Maybe you didn't get cut cause they know you don't stand up for yourself?
Why don’t they? Because exerting control is half the point.
Trash? All who got severance (like myself) will easily find new jobs with companies more deserving of our talents wheel double dipping by collecting unemployment. Maybe the joke is on you.
You don’t deserve a severance.
To put it frankly, they are carrying out the trash.
