Thread regarding VMware layoffs

There are 4.3 million software engineers in the US

Think about that before you decide to quit your job at VMware if you haven't found a replacement position yet.

Such a small number of SWEs, so few that moonlighting and 2nd shifts through contracting are common in the US these days.

A lot of qualified SWEs are choosing less awful careers with saner wlb like product manager or tax accountant.

It allows the few who remain the ability to command higher pay and wfh.

Most SWEs have the replacement role lined up well before giving notice.

Try talking about reasons to stay with VMware that are based in cool tech or interesting problems to solve. Or propose a 90 day longevity bonus. Or accelerate RSU vesting.

Trying to sell a story of fear in this economy -that an engineer willing to code can't get a new job that pays the bills- makes you sound desperate.

I just don't understand why some people think the current salary of SDE is getting lower by H1B workers. This year, even SDE new graduates can get 200k TC.

Do you know the salary for other kinds of jobs? Becoming a hardware engineer is much harder than becoming a software engineer, but the TC for a new graduate in Intel is just 120k.

This kind of scenario won't last. If companies find they can't get enough H1B workers to "lower" the salary, they will just replace your jobs with oversea programmers.

Most of SDE are just writing some CRUD codes or React codes, that can be finished easily with Bootcamp programmers.

Post from TheLayoff.com

If you are not blind, you can see a huge amount of jobs in VMW are already transferred to Indian and East Europe. You should say thank you to all these H1b workers, without them, more jobs will not retain in the US.

This post is stupid beyond all reason!

Why would anyone quit a job they have, without having another one lined up?

Maybe Raghu and his VP's are posting here.

"Companies just can't find anyone qualified to fill the roles. So, jobs are always there waiting to be filled and reason why companies need to import more talents into this country. "

Have you tried to look for a new job? Its brutal out there. NOBODY is hiring. It took me over 3 months to find a new job. I found one probably only because I got in before the hiring freezes began.

H1B is indeed used as a cheap labor scam by the NSF and other govt agencies to get cheap labor. Sorry to burst any Statue of Liberty dreams. Always follow the money to know how the world works.

That is a good sign that US companies still running low of talents in this country.
Companies just can't find anyone qualified to fill the roles.

Faulty logic.
The companies are not using H1B visas to fill a deficit of people.
They are using them to pay lower wages.
The problem is companies do not want to pay employees the going rate for labor.

If the company is SATURATED with H1B workers, then the lower wages become the prevailing wage for people doing the work.

There are 300 trillion engineers in China and India. Who gives a flock.

Sure Jan, we understand numbers aren't your strong point.

There are ~50K Doctors of Chiropracty in the US.
Giving a quack a fancy name doesn't mean they aren't a quack.

There is this wage minimum requirement for H1B salary. H1B employees need
to be paid at par with anyone else to qualify for a specific role.

Yes, and it's a good thing businesses never cheat.

Software engineers are 4.3 millions, good experienced software engineers are far less, even less the ones who also enjoy doing software engineering.

@Pat Didn't Make His Millions Paying US Wages
There is this wage minimum requirement for H1B salary. H1B employees need to be paid at par with anyone else to qualify for a specific role. Go read that at your government's website - US Department of Labor. A lot of the foreign employers require to post the data online for filling in the role with foreign worker. The data can be easily located online. There are other type of visas such as L, J and etc with even higher salary. Pat as nothing to do with this. It is your government's policy.

Here is the logic that one can quit before finding a new job. US have hundred of thousands of H1B engineers alone every year and companies still pushing to increase the quotas/cap. There are about 4 millions of college graduate in the US each year. That is a good sign that US companies still running low of talents in this country. Companies just can't find anyone qualified to fill the roles. So, jobs are always there waiting to be filled and reason why companies need to import more talents into this country.
