Thread regarding DXC Technology layoffs

Milking the company

For every employee who works very hard, there are now 10 pretenders who are just milking the company. Am I wrong?
I'm not trying to justify it, but I totally understand it, because it is the management that turned good employees into those who are now just collecting paycheck while the company still lasts.

Yes, it did. Proof that the "leadership" of DXC is utterly clueless in how to run a large service provider. Every DXC manager goes through what you've described, and it's a truly hateful place to be. I could never understand why I had to downgrade my staff appraisals, as bonuses never got paid and it had absolutely no impact on the company. I hated trying to select staff to lay off while wondering if I was also going to be selected.

I suspect many of us will quietly celebrate when DXC finally slides into oblivion.

Agree. As a Manager, we all had the sword of Damocles hanging over us whilst trying to motivate staff and the only advice I could give, once all the avenues I tried were exhausted were to suggest that they look outside, because they had the skills and didn't deserve to be treated the way DXC treated its staff. Sure, I didn't want to lose people off my team, but keeping them in the roles of constant WFR and trying to ensure they were not working silly hours, because clients accounts were no longer covered by riffed colleagues, was just a never ending circle of diminishing returned.

I was forced to downgrade exceeds and meets expectations to 'does not meet' by HR. I was told by my manager 'if you don't downgrade them, they will and it won't be the right people'. I had to have difficult conversations with good performers that were suddenly 'poor performers' on paper. The lowest of the best bunch.

I tried to get them into growth roles. I was told, if you move them, then they won't be counted in the numbers to be cut. Managers would keep people as a buffer. New Job holders would be unwilling to take on anyone known to be on the WFR list as they thought they were your worst people (totally unfair). Job adverts internal would suddenly have recruitment freezes on them when you tried to get people another job.

Closes eyes. Opens them. Did all that really happen?

There are a few reasons why this happens:

  1. It makes no difference to your chances of surviving a round of layoffs if you work hard or do nothing. Layoffs at DXC are a numbers exercise, with no consideration for performance.
  1. Managers don't care what you're doing, or not doing. They're in the same place as you (I used to be one), wondering when they're going to be laid off themselves. I often found myself being 'under consideration' for WFR whilst trying to work out which of my team of good people I had to lose. It's not a great place be as a senior manager who wants to do good things for their team.
  1. There are no rewards for high achievers. No pay rise, no bonus, not much chance of promotion.

So where's the motivation to achieve? Where's the motivation to work hard, when working hard gets you exactly nothing? That's right - there isn't any.

Most of the milking traditionally has been from the top until the shareholders put a stop to it last year. The cuts are indiscriminate and will cover both hard working billable staff, costly staff, cheap staff, old hands and new hands. So it’s always been inclusive.

OP - you are absolutely right and yes we do have the list of people who are milking the company - it is just a matter of time. Pruning is work in progress.

Platform-x is calculating the raises using our AI and data lake and Market trends - so this is a fool proof process which is equitable to the employees and the shareholders. Stay tuned.

Now who fault is that? The managers for not knowing who does what. Don't blame the employee because work isn't spread around to all on the team. Don't blame the employee for not being used effectively, for not using yve employees expertise.

Again it's all on the management !

We were promised that we'd know if we're getting a raise and how much my August 1st, do as you say , do the right thing ! Management failed again !
