Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

OCI North America was just gutted

I was on the call with most of OCI's N/A division, and everyone who was on the call was laid off (including me.) Technically we're still employees until the 15th of this month, and we're still awaiting details of our severance, next steps, etc.

Sounds like Oracle no longer wants to be heavily involved in startups and the next move is everyone outside of N/A who's still employed will be merged under existing leadership. Even the head of our org was let go.

I don't have any other details outside of that, but feel free to add to this thread as this develops. I'm sorry to all of whom were impacted by this, and good luck everyone. 🤍

You hate for anyone to get let go but I must admit the exception are for people like this. You only wished you really knew who they are so that you could avoid hiring them or helping them when they need it.

Lurker here. When I first saw “OCI” , I was thinking , “damn, who knew Oracle had so many people working on Oracle Call Interface” then I realized “C” must be for cloud. Anyways, best wishes to all those impacted. I was SE in the same place with one of the big telcos 2 years ago in my mid 50s , 2 kids in college, and a bay area mortgage. It was a tough 6 months but I found a better paying job and am much, much happier without the constant stress and anxiety of layoffs. My advice is to take a month to process it, maybe get some more excercise, spend some time with family and friends. Then start getting your network activated, resume, leetcode, and make as many calls and go on as many interviews as you can. Best wishes.

Not sure, unfortunately. I have no info on the situation in Seattle.

Then your thread title is worse than misleading. STFU.

2 years ago, after cleverly engineering my layoff and laughing all the way to my final exit, within a couple months OCI contacted me with a position offer based out of Seattle. I laughed, my wife laughed too.

Knowing Oracle from the inside for over 20 years and being aware of the insane cr-p load of horse sh*t therein, think yourselves lucky to get out. The remains of your career should be far brighter now.

Ok, so I looked into this team and on ARIA it appears Oracle for Startups is not a part of NACT and is part of developer services.

Q: Sorry for you predicament. Hope you find something else soon.... But what kind of team is "OCI Startups" ?
A: Oracle for Startups provides free Cloud services to startups to help them migrate to OCI, connect them with other startups and products, and pitch to prospective VCs. We (were) made up of engineers, product managers, designers, CX folks, you name it. It was a way to help more startups get on OCI and take advantage of Cloud, with some of the startups even having been acquired directly by Oracle.

Q: "Startups...you mean that part of Oracle that sucked up to Larry, and never had a single success story? A huge waste of time as it was all smoke and mirrors. Good move to finally shut it down."
A: This is a very insensitive perspective to have, especially when your opinion comes at the expense of peoples' livelihoods. We had a great team made up of a lot of talented folks who put a ton of love into our products, I'd be damned if I let some bitter scrooge dismiss all of that with such a ridiculous blanket statement. Go elsewhere.

Sorry for you predicament. Hope you find something else soon.... But what kind of team is "OCI Startups" ? is it a team associated with some service / product deployed on the Oracle Cloud ? is it a marketing / solutions team that caters to Startups specifically ? What kind of roles were let go ? I am an SDE with one of the OCI product teams... so I would like to know more.

Q: "If you don't have "details", why use such a headline ? nothing at OCI is guttted."
A: After this morning, Startups is practically non-existent. The VP of our division informed us ourselves that Oracle no longer has much interest in startups. That, paired with other news of other areas of OCI having been impacted, means that OCI as a whole is impacted to some extent, with a lot of that damage having been in N/A. Especially Startups.

I'm just trying to relay what I'm finding out myself.

Q: "This post needs clarification. What part of OCI N/A was impacted?"
A: At the moment, Startups. I heard a small percentage of OCI outside of Startups was also impacted yesterday, but I don't have details on that yet.

Sorry for the confusion, I'm still figuring it all out myself.

Q: "can someone provide severance package details here?"
A: I haven't received our HR packet yet, but when I do I will update this thread accordingly.

Q: "I haven’t heard anything about this, do you have any more details? I’m in NA cloud so you’d think I would’ve seen something…"
A: Again, I'm just basing everything I know off on the small amount of details I received on the call I was on earlier this morning. There was some news that OCI was impacted before our call, but it was supposedly small. Then Startups, which is the division I was in, was impacted. Most of it seems to be hitting N/A. It could just end with Startups or it could not, I wish I knew more but this came as a surprise to everyone involved, especially my manager (who was also impacted.)

Sad thing is, we all thought we were safe up until this morning. Came out of nowhere.

So much for OCI being the future with even GBUCS being rolled into them eventually etc. etc. However, I am sure the insperational leadership will make everyone feel wanted and appreciated for those that are left (tongue firmly in cheek). Amazing that folks like Mike Sicilia keep their jobs. They are like parents that pit their own kids against each other and sit back and watch, blaming the kids for not working out it.

".....so this post doesn't seem accurate"

"Was this one team in OCI or is this across the board in OCI?"

The areas that were impacted on the call I was on was product, design, and management. And considering the VP of Startups was also let go, well, I'm just going to assume this is impacting across the board.

But that's all the info I really have on this. I'm learning about it at the same pace everyone else is. Gonna update accordingly.

"And being employed with Oracle is only going to enhance the experience." Well said.

And I'm not sure how many were let go exactly, but there were about 20 people on the call I was on.
