Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Survived, but…

Survived and got 2 hours of sleep. Now wide awake: thinking about colleagues let go today, how long I have until I’m in their position, and what questions I need to ask over the next few weeks to determine if I have anywhere between 3-12 months of runway.

They let go a lot of good people today, some with decades at Oracle, to some with only a few months and no time to prove their worth. Having been through multiple layoffs and downturns, I understand that no one is safe, and this RIF strongly underscores that narrative. There was little logic, just unlucky cuts.

From people RIFd earlier this year at oracle and other companies, they’re finding a brutal market with a lot of hiring freezes at bigger tech companies and slim prospects at startups given the funding retrenchment and pending downturn. I’m thankful to have a head start, but fearing this same market response which seems to be getting worse by the week.

I’m just glad I was given a bit more time, but my prospects are quite precarious. Also one of those with less than a year of O on the resume, which one isn’t a good look vs my competition, usually a red flag. Dreading the “skeleton crew” work ahead, but hoping I can clear enough time away from that to find a new job, because I know how this ends.

If you have skills that is marketable, I would advise to leave before they tell you to go and your skills are not needed anymore. Working at Oracle was always a dream until it began changing. Those managers that lay you off will be hard pressed to get another good gig.

Oracle doesn’t appreciate their people. Hence, no raises. At least I didn’t get one ever. Then it’s the constant fear wondering when your time is up and for 80% of the people it will happen eventually. Leave as soon as you can and go be appreciated. Oracle had some very talented people while I was there but most left or were let go. Cloud is BS. More marketing than substance. Nobody wants it.

OP, you obviously know that it is time to start your job search. I would not worry about having less than a year at Oracle as any recruiter or hiring manager in tech knows what is going on with the company.

My spouse just started a new job last week that he found rather quickly after his company lost its IT contract. (He is 55+ and was with Oracle years ago.)

What LOB/org are you in ?. As for layoff ... I have a Simple rules
#1. Never let your skill fall behind your salary
#2. Acquire a new skill, each year, beyond your job, e.g a new skill - AI/ML, AWS, etc
#3. Manage up & set boundaries/expectations

I wouldn't wait to start looking for a new job. Consider this round 1. Companies who have mass layoffs usually have to do more after they analyze the initial results.
