Strange atmosphere inside the company

Morale is zero. Is your manager also constantly trying to convince you that you need to continue working hard and act as if nothing is happening?

Anyone manager making $300,000 got their stock some years ago and saw it rise up. That has not been happening this year to date and it might not go up so much in the future. People made good money during the dot com run up in 1999 and then saw it all go away if they hadn't cashed out.

Managers, directors and other higher-up positions at VMware will translate into VERY high paying positions at Broadcom especially if the stock stays high. Heck there are technical support engineers (not managers) easily clearing $300k+ a year after salary/bonus/stocks are are tallied up.

If you get to stay in with Broadcom you have the potential to see your compensation skyrocket and when the dust settles you won’t care that 50-60-70 percent of your colleagues were cut in layoffs.

Broadcom runs lean but those who get to stay make out like bandits.

I feel like they are micro managing more than normal. - perhaps trying to justify their jobs even though I expect most all of them will be let go.

Simply put, you are still getting paid to work and while it may be hard to focus, you are better off than someone that has no income coming in and having to be looking for a job. Best advice, find a job while you have one. No one really wants to work for Broadcom. If the deal takes a year to close, you have plenty of time to find something you will like. Trust me, it is not great there and not a place anyone with talent voluntarily will go to work.

One can surmise there are many possible reasons for this. Here are two.

  1. A rapid decrease of qualified employees will leave the acquired company
    in a really bad state. Better to keep everyone around to make the layoffs easier.
  1. Groups are going to be cut hard. Your manager's encouragement may be
    genuine. It may help you to stand out when they are doing 'below this line'
    cuts in the future.
