It is becoming clear to me that I will never be able to get a promotion here. But what worries me is that I have been looking for a job for several months and I have not been able to get an offer that implies a significant pay increase. Others say that they got a huge increase after they left, so that depresses me a little...

If you're happy and you know it, then your face will surely show it
If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands
This made me laugh because it's so true. "The sitting skills learned while remaining silent for the last decade will soon serve me well:" Yep. Start asking too many provocative questions, challenging narratives, and promoting new ideas or changes and see how it works out for you here. Go ahead and see to believe.
I’m looking for a job outside. There is very little hope here. I talked to several recruiters. The increment could be 10% ~ 15%. Waiting for my result. It is really a time to jump off the boat now.
Totally agree with 1sow+1hsZRbT7. The "Technology" ship at Seagate Technology sailed many years ago. Now we spend most of our time stuffing more heads and disks into a drive while telling the street, "HAMR is coming out next year." Time left over is laser focused on perpetuating the latest organizational fad (legacy, inclusiveness, etc, etc).
At least I'm close to retirement. The sitting skills learned while remaining silent for the last decade will soon serve me well: sitting in a bass boat, watching the Grand kids or just relaxing in front of the tv.
WHAT!!! Working in a dying or practically dead technology company like Seagate and spending the majority of your time working on their mind numbing internal development policies not getting you massive offers to go elsewhere - SHOCKER!!!
Never say never. I got a promotion after a 14 year gap. So if you like waiting it out and trying your hand at winning the Seagate version of Survivor it’s possible. Suddenly after everyone else is let go or moves out you might end up an invaluable knowledge expert. LOL. On the other side I’ve heard there is very little actual internal interest in high level management high stress positions. Why aren’t the applications flooding in for those? Nobody want to work that hard? LOL
Depends on what you do and where you live and the employer pool that's there.
Back in 2019 when Ravi the destroyer eliminated most of US IT, I got hit. I got a new job in a few months at about a 6% base pay increase, which wound up being probably 10% because the bonus structure was more generous than my last few years at STX.
Another person who got hit at the same time didn't find something for 10-11 months and I don't know how the salary wound up. I was in a bigger metro area than he was, so I had more opportunities available.
When I talked with other people who got dinged, they said they mostly wound up a little on the short end of the stick salary-wise.
Bottom line - job markets are fluid and there are too many variables to make generalizations. If you want to work with a recruiting service and make sure your resume in keeping with current expectations, it's probably better than going it on your own.
Ignore what others say. They have an agenda to make STX look as bad as possible and make up tales.
