Thread regarding VMware layoffs

I'm doing something wrong

I'm in sales and marketing. I sent out 50+ applications in the past month and I only managed to land one interview. I've been at VMware for two years but my previous position was nine years, so it's not as if my resume makes it seem like I'm a job hopper. I also used a resume service to improve my chances. What else could I be doing? I'm getting discouraged and scared.

Thanks for all the advice, I truly appreciate it. I've updated my LinkedIn and contacted a few people who might be able to help me. I'm not giving up, it's just hard to stay positive and optimistic amid everything.

the only thing i have learnt from VMware is .... networking. Does not matter if you are good or not .... even works for all our latest acquisitions.

Are you in sales or are you in marketing? Times have changed, you are either one of the other. Maybe employers are confused on what you are looking to do

I don't think it's anything you are doing. I think it's possibly what's going on with the job market. I sent out a number of resumes as well and quite a few have come back with responses saying that they have decided not to fill the position. There's an awful lot of talk out there about some sort of recession. And so I think companies are getting a little bit spooked about it. Hopefully it's temporary. As a previous person said you need to really reach out to people you know because when you send out resumes they are read by robots and it's all systematic so your chances of being able to get through are not that great. We probably have a year before this thing gets completed so there's plenty of time. So take this opportunity to find the job you really want and don't sweat it yet.

I’ve applied for a few jobs too. Only ones I have heard back from are ones with a low-ball salary. The remaining ones are still “under review” almost a month later.

network. network. network. oh and if i didn't tell you, network.

sending out resumes is a certified WoT.

reach out to people m, don't ask for a job, ask about what's happening in their space, etc. linkedin is ok, but has become way overused. start with close acquaintances.

finally what is "sales and marketing ". you are either a salesman or a digital marketer. that's all anyone cares about. especially on the marketing side. very tough getting generalist marketing roles. there's no longer any appreciation for that, everyone thinks digital marketing will save the day..and it doesn't by the way... good luck.

Don’t be scared or discouraged (I know, easier said than done)! You have time to find a job. Network on LinkedIn and see if you know anyone where you are applying. Most companies offer a referral bonus and typically referrals are giving a higher priority. Also, look at smaller private equity backed companies too. They pay just as well and often offer more flexibility. I promise you, you will find a job and the deal will take time to close so no need to rush at all.
