What are the chances there will be opportunities to transfer from Houston to Bako this year? How risky of a move would that be? really wish I would have considered my living options/ environment more thoroughly in college SMH

Heavy oil has never made a lot of sense (more energy and cost to recover lower value oil) but now that we have realized the horrific carbon intensity of the operations, it is being phased out. The only question remaining is how to monetize the assets by selling them to the highest bidder. Bako has the spectre of the spills. Venezeula is not going to be able to operate for many years, apparently, since both white house parties have kept it shut down. I expect we will walk away this year, like every other intelligent company.
There is a good chance to return to Venezuela, and if you have heavy oil background experience in Bakersfield, you will be golden.
Bako is one of the best kept secrets in the company. I wouldn’t hesatate to grab a roll there.
The last time it was desirable to move to Bako was about a decade ago. The decline in reserves, low margin, heavy oil falling out of favor, and worst PR possible now make it more like a gulag than a career opportunity. Location is abysmal, there is no career upside, and it will be difficult to transition back to a conventional or UCR role, particularly in a shrinking company.
Run! While you still can!

Chances opening come up this year in Bako? If I could leave today from Houston, you wouldn’t ask me twice
Houston is such a dump. Get out if you can.
@nwj+1hp00z1L; it is pretty obvious you are a rookier or have never re-located with the company. Have you ever read the protection we get when we move to a new location and buy a House? Buying now a house with a company relo and house market dropping should not be a concern at all for this person.
Go and continue listening to Mad Money recommendations and repeating what you hear.
Pretty ignorant comment below. rumors of selling or leaving the SJV have existed for the last 10 years. SJV just keeps evolving. Eventually it won’t be in the portfolio but at these prices and given it’s reputation of a breeding ground for talent, SJV should make it another 10-15 years, even with the posturing of carbon free. Plus CNE projects are now being launched here. SJV has made 600 million dollars and on pace for 1.4 Billion in 2022. The company it’s foolish enough to toss that away due to lower production
Working in Bako is like trying to extend your career as a carburetor or VHS repair-person. You can be the best in the world at it, but ultimately your career will be over well before you wanted it to be. The handwriting's on the wall, Bako is dead or sold by the end of the decade.
SJV didn’t even fill all the open spots in Integration and hitting more O&M. In a decline but if you’re on the tail end or mid career might be a good move. At these prices still making money
Nah no risk in moving to a shrinking BU with a higher carbon intensity that has just had an extra round of layoffs in additional two enterprise wide layoffs.
With real estate ready to hit the sh!tter because of rising interest rates and inflation, don’t count of selling your home for a long while, if you end up going there and buying now. Buying in an up market is never a good idea, especially if you need an exit strategy working for an O&G company. If you go to Bako in this high inflationary period, you’re better off renting.
I was in Bakersfield for 10 years. It’s fine, but hot. The air quality was what made me try to leave. It took a while because of all the layoffs that I had to survive. The bu is in decline. Expect reorgs every 3 years to plan for what the bu should look like in 10 years.
Bako or Houston? Not a difficult decision if you want assurance of a longer career and to have more lifestyle flexibility. Houston 100%.
If you're in a role that Bako actually needs (like I&E), could happen so that someone else can get out. But consider that now you're going to be the one trying to hope someone else wants to lifestyle change to the dusty Central Valley so you can get out. And look up "valley fever" before you sign anything.
