Thread regarding Fidelity Investments layoffs

Fidelity vs Roku

Looking right now... Have some good options, what do you think... I got 2 offers (Data Scientist), one from Fidelity, one from Roku. Both are in the same city (United States).

  • Fidelity: Total comp: 250 k per year (Base: 180 k, Bonus: 70k)
  • Roku: Total comp: 300 k per year (Base 270 k, RSU: 30 k per year)

Worries about Roku:

  1. The reviews I see here are confusing and some of them scary (fire and hire culture). Fidelity seems to have a more normal WLB and structure.
  2. Fidelity made an offer right after the interviews, while Roku was back and forth for couple of weeks till they made final decision.

Thoughts?

Remember, the only thing that separates you and the job you want is an application and job interview. Why not go for Joanna Rotenburg's job and kick her out to the unemployment line? That job only took 1 application and interview for her too. Remember that. Apply for the job you deserve and get it. And btw can you imagine all of the internal applications for these C- suite jobs if we all applied at once? surely a few internals would be given those jobs. I have no doubt. It's just a matter of applying.

I'd definitely choose Roku. Fidelity is not a real tech company, even though it would like to think so. Too fu----g slow and way, way, way too many politics.

The bonus will be there it went up and down a tad as I always got good annual reviews. The profit sharing will be there and its even better in good stock market years. I always took advantage of the 401K match at 7%. After 24 years I took the VBO. I left the profit sharing 401K in the market and did not touch it. Result is complete financial freedom at age 54.

What do they even do?

Create complicated looking charts full of numbers and pretty graphs that tell powerful people what they want to hear. See, for example, Mr. Nate Silver.

Come to Fidelity to find stability. Might not be such a bad thing when facing a recession.

Don’t comes to Fidelity to find intellectual heft. For every competent person at this company, there are 5 useless deadweights and that comes to drag you down after a bit.

you may or may not get a 70k bonus from FIdelity. They usually pay about 80% of what you bonus potential is. The way the market is going right now, bonus may be so-so. You get profit sharing so that helps

Your job title reminded me there is a review on Glassdoor one star and titled "Data scientist go elsewhere"

  • what this person writes I found throughout every department I worked in (>20 years), he/she reflects the real culture of the place, so the sentiment is spot on IMO.

No insight about Roku, I would think Fidelity would be a safe choice, but mentally just be ready for a political heavy, faux foreword thinking environment, like screaming at the wind. Buckle in for a lot of doublespeak/frustration. If you can tolerate that I would imagine you'll do fine.

Good luck!

Glassdoor review: sorted by lowest rating and on the fifth page as of today

"Oct 29, 2021 - Data Scientist in Boston, MA

Pros
It pays well and the benefits are good. There are women in leadership positions. For tech people at least, fairly flexible.

Cons
Oh where to start. I worked in Fidelity labs. The so called culture of "speaking frankly" and "taking risks" is 100% a lie. You can speak as frankly as you want as long as you're saying what your manager wants to hear. You cannot innovate. My manager incorrectly considered himself an expert in the fields of every person on his team and never accepted any opposing views. All the data scientists on my team quit. No one reached out to us. Nobody cared. Take this warning seriously.

Advice to Management
There's no point giving advice to management. I have a PhD and many years of experience, but there's always going to be a blowhard in a suit."
