Thread regarding U.S. Bank layoffs

They keep laying off hard workers

That's something I'll never understand. The fact is we do have fat that needs to be trimmed. We have people who spend most of the day doing nothing or who have been here for years but still don't know what they're doing. But somehow, those people always manage to survive layoffs while some of the hardest workers get cut. Can somebody explain how this happens to me, please, because I'm failing to find any logic behind it?

Age and salary often contribute to being let go.

I can only speak from what I have witnessed personally. My area saw a huge cut many years ago, where whole teams were let go. Since then, every RIF has cut people that make more money than their peers. Maybe they've earned valid promotions over a long career, but their work can be done by someone that costs less. Maybe they came on at a higher salary. Maybe they're simply overpaid. There are a lot of reasons, but they all come back to their cost relative to peers. People on this site regularly claim that it's young people hating veteran employees, but the people making the decisions are in their 50s and 60s. And yes, when positions open up, younger people are hired. But in my experience, that's because a grade 16 is being replaced with a grade 11.
