Thread regarding Barnes & Noble layoffs

Barnes & Noble will become like Blockbuster

One store open in the middle of nowhere for nostalgia's sake. Everything else will be gone within five years (and I'm being very generous with that timeframe). I'm not saying this to be mean. Barnes & Noble has been a great place for book lovers for decades, but it has served its purpose. We're now behind the times, which means that our days are numbered. And I'm okay with that.

Maybe Barnes &Noble could come up with a new name for a smaller format store? Maybe B. Dalton Bookseller?

They'll find temps who don't give a hoot. These temps will be valued as much as you with your years of service. Don't do this to yourself.

That’s what they did when they fired over 3000 full timers in 2018. Hired lots of uninvested part timers who left the minute another store offered them .25cents more.

Two more comments --

Smaller format stores will not save you. Sears tried too but once the public turns on you, it's over. Their previously unpleasant experiences will keep them from buying from you.

Other companies will not value your dedication to the sinking ship. They will perversely hold it against you. I was surprised to see this with Sears but not only do you not get 'credit' there is a bias. Leave or supplement unless you're retiring. This place will be bad for your resume.

Barnes & Noble is Sears & Kmart.
Why these companies don't call it a day & close entirely is a mystery unless you consider that years of poor decisions fueled by GREED got them here so whatever money is left to grab will be grabbed before it's done. But not by you.

If you have been there for years -- Do not stay in the stores until the end. It's better to move on than wait it out because it's bad for you emotionally. Unless you're close to retirement, find something else even if you do both jobs. There is no need to torture yourself and It's Not Going To Get Better. I saw this with my Sears co-workers and staying made it worse, not better.

The change required to be successful is working.

Keep telling yourself that.

Your wrong people want bookstores, look at the resurgence of independent bookstores recently. B&N will continue to close large stores and open smaller stores. The strategy is working to make B&N more profitable. The new stores are being well received by customers. B&N will be around for a long time due to this reinvention. The change required to be successful is working.

Exactly. You can buy books directly from Penguin, which distributes over 350 publishers. So yeah, BN and Amazon are pretty much irrelevant. Also, Penguin is trying to buy Simon & Schuster and Paramount, so that is even better. I hope the DOJ lets the deal go through. Sc--w BN and let them sink like the Titanic. Down with BN, Daunt, Waterstones.
