Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Avoiding WARN

It’s not just Ford doing it, almost everyone is trying to avoid WARN. The company my wife works for has had a lot of small layoffs lately to avoid WARN, that is, not to trigger more media attention. What is Ford trying to accomplish this way?

Big reductions don’t play well with politicians as they need to appear to care about US jobs. It is hard for politicians to give a company money to ‘invest in US jobs’ when that company is having massive layoffs and massive off-shoring.

If Ford actually cared about their workers they would be transparent and have a one and done. No one enjoys the secretive reoccurring layoff model, especially when they accomplish nothing.

They accomplish a few things. First, they avoid paralyzing the workforce or witnessing negative effects for at least 60 days. How many times have you heard people say that they are not going to do anything more for the next x weeks in anticipation of being cut? Water cooler talk goes up dramatically, etc. Second and maybe more importantly, it prevents people from talking amongst each other to organize a lawsuit or a negative post-employment action. If it just happens one day like yesterday with no forewarning, it's over in a blink of the eye and people are out the door without knowing who else got cut. All the way nice - For Ford. It has nothing to do with being humane.
