Thread regarding MetLife Inc. layoffs

I feel ashamed that I am still here

I still haven't received an acceptable new offer, although lately I've been putting a lot of energy into getting out of here. I am happy for some colleagues who left, but on the other hand, after their departure the work here became even more unbearable. In a way, I feel ashamed to still be part of this misery here. Anyone else failing to leave and in what ways are you trying to find an exit?

Hire an interviewing coach - there are multiple paid services that will mock interview you and provide actionable feedback. Some of them specialize in specific companies as they have standardized interview processes. I tried two different services, felt the feedback was helpful. I received an offer and even got some negotiation tips.

I left. I felt ashamed- disappointed in myself for not finding something else. After a lot of interviews and a lot off rejections I got one offer and I nervously took it a year ago. I feel if I was still there the constant churn and rejection would make that feeling worse.

How did I cope? I interviewed a lot. I practiced with others. I took training. I focused on the things that were important to my career and did my best to back away from the nonsense.

Interviewing is hard, it's a skill. Articulating your value is as important as delivering value if you're looking to profit from it.

How ashamed did you feel when you learned that you could make eye contact and talk with our CEO during his visit to the office?

Out Of Touch…..

But hey, more stock buy backs got approved. Thank goodness the executives will get their Wall Street bonuses while we get less than inflation raises.

Agree, there is nothing to be ashamed of - keep at it and leave no stone unturned. It will happen so don’t give up. Giving up is continuing to remain employed at MetLife. That’s something to be ashamed of. The company shamelessness takes full advantage of its employees by grossly underpaying them and not recognizing everyone is an individual. They want stepford wives as employees despite their propaganda. They are the worst kind of company…they are pathologically cheap while being braggadocios at the same time but dont even know it! The facade is cracked and they are frauds to the core. We love our employees…but we won’t pay you your worth or even market rate.

Hang in there, don’t beat yourself up, it will happen.

Don’t be ashamed to better yourself by leaving when you are not a priority to them.

They care about keeping operating costs low through cheap labor and outsourcing. And if this strategy somehow makes for a better customer experience it is pure luck. That’s right, Luck. Customer and employee experience not at the heart although this what they blab about. Good luck! Current customer loyalty only goes so far but certainly not much further than your stepped on burned out workforce.

Sad reality of big business today….and driving force for shift in US employment.

Apparently May is when you are supposed to have a career discussion with your manager. IMO-managers are not interested in helping people grow and advance. I don’t know how true it is-but I’ve heard of managers denying to let an employee move to a new position applied for within the company. Or I’d they allow the move-they make the provisions so bad that the potential new team says no thanks. No one wants to wait 90 days for an internal transfer.

I sometimes feel shame but not for myself - shame is on the mess that the company has become.

Being the best employee is simply not enough and people realize this.

Why cares so much about a company who does not value their own people and enables such a terrible culture that you feel so helpless and shamed for looking to leave?

Keep looking, that’s the only way to find your exit. It’s what so many are doing.

I wouldn’t call it failing to leave. Maybe holding out for the perfect opportunity while getting paid to do a job.

That’s right - just a job.

No shame in keeping on to pay the bills while still looking. Takes time when everyone is looking to jump.

Reality check? who should feel shame?

Sometimes even great employees hit a speed bump in their careers. Why shame anyone including those not reaching full potential?

The real shame here is that this company does not equally invest in their employees. And let’s not pretend that this is not the truth. I see too many leaders throw their people away instead of doing their jobs managing and developing them.

Equality is lacking unless there is a need to check a box.

Shame on the employer and the spineless privileged who prey here.

If you're a great employee, you'll find something soon. If you're not, then yeah, feel ashamed.

Very confusing time at MetLife. I’m sure many others are filled with the same mixed emotions. How could you not?Every day learning of more people leaving, pop up promotions that leave you scratching your head, unpredictable work conditions and shifty decision making are enough to make anyone question their future.

It sounds like you are making an effort to find your new path so don’t feel ashamed. Do the best that you can, keep looking and you will find the right fit. Best of luck to you.
