Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

The main questions that we need to ask ourselves

I left the company after 6 years. Was Unhappy for a while and that seems to have been a reasonable decision from me.
What I think is that most of the people stay only out of fear of not being able to find another job with similar pay and benefits. But that isn’t true is it? This is just another company that happens to treat their employees poorly.
I asked myself a couple of questions while making the decision to leave.

Is this a job that guaranies me stability?

The answer was no. Someone can decide to fire me tomorrow. I’ve seen that happen to a lot of my colleagues

Are there any growth opportunities?

The answer was very little to note even though I gave my best during the years

Did my quality of life improve during my employment here?

Definitely not. No work life balance. As time passed I’ve seen less and less of my family and friends

Can I picture myself doing this job in the next five years?

Definitely not. I’m close to being burnout as it is

Am I earning that much that I need to make these sacrifices?

Not really

If this helps anyone strengthen their decision to leave this company I am a happy man.

Although some of this is true I’ve found that this wretched company is great at convincing the average employee that they don’t have skills in the market. Because of this many are afraid to leave or even look around. There are opportunities galore out there and I was shocked when I started interviewing how much more OTHER companies valued me vs what A-state did.

Same here. My new company warned me how much harder the job would be compared to Allstate and what I’d been used to.

Below poster is spot on. AfterI got laid off in 2020 I went to Geico and once it was known that I came from Allstate I was pretty much a pariah. It took some months and someone finally admitting that I was avoided because I was at Allstate. This person said that Allstaters are looked at in other companies as lazy and arrogant but at the same time trying to push their way around. We are not looked at favorably in the industry and that may impact our hire ability in the industry at this point.

The average Allstater is not valued in the broader job market. The reputation for “hanger on-ers” and complainers is well known by other companies, especially in the Chicago region. The modern employer wants none of the perceived laziness, mediocrity and complaining that is the stereotyping of Allstaters. So best advice from someone who left the company several years ago? To steal line from Red in Shawshank Redemption, get busy living or get busy dying. Kick yourself in the bu-t and take personal accountability. If you aren’t on an upward track and satisfied with Allstate, then get busy improving your skill inventory, networking like crazy and finding a career pathway somewhere else just as fast as you can. The alternative? Die by a thousand paper cuts at Allstate and see your long term career advanced crater, along with probably too your mental and physical well being, your financial security and maybe even your marriage and family life. Because I know of more than one Allstater stuck in the mud who saw his wife become fed up and file for divorce.

Great post. These are all factors to consider when determining whether you should leave. Biggest issue for me was the question of development. It seemed the company just wanted everyone to stay in their current roles and had absolutely zero interest in the career development of the employee. If you’re stuck in a position where you’re unable to get a better job, you should look elsewhere, if you in fact want that better job.

I went to another carrier and it’s nice not constantly being pulled into meetings about pendings they have no idea what to do with. It’s nice not having nearly every process broken. It’s nice when leadership actually CARES about broken process. I am not sure where or when it all went wrong at Allstate but it became a company I didn’t recognize after 23 years. I understand it’s a stock company but to completely disregard the employees and customers is shameful!

I’m in claims and it sees to me the hottest part of this dumpster fire is FL. They’re passing out their work like it’s Halloween. I am lucky enough to have enough of y own work to keep me busy. Other people are scrambling for work to make their target hours.

I was going to hold out for severance but my team is one of several in CCC moving to ATSC or Claim in the next few months. Now I'm getting out as quick as I can as it obvious severance is not much of an option anymore and they are just going to pass us around until we quit. Most on my team are actively looking as we are not going to tolerate being shoved into the claims or ATSC mess.

I really think it depends on the position and department. I myself am the opposite on most of the comments made by OP but I also don't work in claims which seems to be the biggest dumpster fire here.

My biggest worry and reason to leave is zero trust in leadership, fear of more layoffs, and total despise for Shapiro and company. After 16 years here and my age being in the 50s it won't be as easy to find a job as it is a known fact the your hirability is exponentially less for someone in their 50s vs 20s or 30s. Other than that reasonable work volumes, decent work life balance working from home, and a job a actually like would be why I stay. But since 2020 and seeing what evil this company did to so many people I have gone from love to content and are more apt to leave than I was then.
