Thread regarding Nationwide (Insurance and Financial Services) layoffs

Best Decision

I walked away(more like sprinted) in 2021 and there was no looking back. The environment completely changed slowly but surely during my time with Nationwide and it became very toxic. No one.....and I mean no one was TRULY happy on my team and that gave me a HUGE wake up call. It was obvious with multiple conversations I had with coworkers, that they were clearly just stuck in their position and feared to make a change(I could never live like that). Although I was very good at what I did, was an asset, and truly did care about what I did in my position, I just didn't see myself there in the long run. I started to plan my departure months and months ahead of time and never looked back to follow my own endeavors. I even had an ex co-worker tell me recently that he was happy for me and that I made the best decision in leaving when I did. Since then I've been healthier, happier, literally sleep in peace every night, and on Sunday, I don't worry about what's to come on Monday. It's not too late!!!

Some jobs are better than others. They don’t mind totally overworking brand new nilc people and then seriously burying Level 1 BI and then Level 2 BI is doable. SIU has now split so that the desk is getting whacked but the field is doable. Nilc turnover really makes it hard to ever have it adequately staffed.

I think the salary is good. I doubled my salary in the first 5 years I was there. But it is based on performance AND there is only so much per team to give out each year. If you are on a high performing team, it can be tough to get ahead. Or if you have a manager that has favorites.

What you just said about salaries is not correct. It may depend on what state you are working from because there are or were regional variations. If you apply for a job with NW and the pay is not what you like, you can decline to take the job, but based on what I see in adjuster job postings the pay is very competitive.

Salaries are cr-p compared to the workload and stress in claims. It's also very difficult to advance. People that have been there 20+ years make $50k to $60k in claims.

IDK what department you would be applying for but claims is not in a “dire and permanent” staffing crisis. They hired a lot of people over the past 6-9 months. Lots of full time WFH positions so it is very attractive to job seekers. If you’re coming from one of the “farms” (SF, Farmers) they will sn---h you up. As companies go these days, NW is one of the very best to work for. I realize that these days that can still mean there is plenty to complain about but it’s still top of the pile. Good benefits, salary, etc. Go for it.

Seriously thinking of abandoning a pension at the farm and applying. Are things improving from the COVID bs that likely occurred? Is the company in a dire and permanent staffing crisis?

Not sure what department you were in or what you did but from my perspective, on
my team in claims, you left when it was the absolute worst and missed the best. Great stuff started happening the first of the year. First the bonus, then the raises (I can only speak for myself but mine was eye-popping), then a lot of new people started getting hired and it has not stopped. They are taking a huge load off already. I was also about to leave in the latter half of 2021. October was a BAD month and there were bad months before and after. Glad I gritted my teeth and hung on. If I had not I would have missed it all.

NW has its issues but it IS #21 on the Fortune 100 Best Companies list. Think about that for a bit.

I was at Pacific Life, I noticed all the 150-200 year old financial and insurance institutions are losing their flipping mind and have a serious FOMO complex and have to copy everything their competitors are doing even if it leads to impending doom.
