Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Stuck in the middle and stressed

I am a low level ( lowest ) manager that this week had the displeasure of delivering annual reviews. I am told from "leadership" that I cannot give a 5 unless the staff member is ready for promotion, and there is a position to promote them to. I also need to provide a business justification to give a 4. The staff have all been with the company for a long time as have I. I can find no official policy stating that practice. Do you know how tough it is to provide the annual review to staff that ALL worked their butts off and got a measly 1.75% raise. It's so hard to review that with them.
I am thinking of leaving or retiring early to get the help out!!

Imperialism advantage is the dealio. Now, let's brush up on singing the company theme song, screaming mission statements, walking the bridge to show one's fidelity to the corporation, and putting on silly wigs for the sick amusement our oligarchs and overlords who own us.

The snack trains, candy, pizza parties, and company branded mugs/hats/stickers will definitely help with morale. Who cares about money and real benefits in the US empire? Empire of lies

After working for UHC for almost 3 decades, I can feel your pain! It was disconcerting as a manager to deliver 1% or less raises and a couple hundred dollars (maybe) in incentives only to have an announcement on the company intranet stating "Record Profits".

Personal note from an 'older' person who hope for national US healthcare - my point is the healthcare issue has been around for half a century in the US while most of the world resolved this long ago and actually has universal real health care-not privatized for profit job dependent "health" "care" that benefits the American oligarchs.

Over the years I have known numerous people who worked at a particular job just for the health insurance. Often a family member, child or adult, had a medical problem. They were in a situation where it was really necessary. Some hard working people where writing checks for thousands (sometimes tens thousands) of dollars and were trying to save their homes, retirement, and families and not go into bankruptcy. Many who 'fell in the cracks' were often not eligible for assistance and healthcare was not user friendly in the states.
Also, many younger people don't know that most HMO&PPOs were created almost half a century ago in an effort to make healthcare available at cost effective prices-believe it or not. One problem is we still have health insurance companies practicing medicine, allowing and disallowing what medical expenses will be covered and getting even more Americans stressed and sick in this plutocratic empire--- even COBRA policies have been very limited. It's intentional in the oligarchy.

All the layers of management mean no raises or the people doing the work. Assoc. Director/Director/General Manager--all those could and should be rolled into one manager. Most top heavy company I ever worked for in 30 plus years. I left and went where good work is rewarded. Plenty of good jobs our there right now, stop complaining and get yourself out.

I was there and I was 100% honest and told them the truth! I said I wanted to give them 4’s and 5’s and I got those taken away. I was told I wasn’t allowed to have any 5’s like yourself for xyz reason one was in a leadership program. I was “allowed” to give them a 4, the rest I had to give 2’s and no bonuses. I asked for a bonus, but it slowly got taken as if I had any control in the first place. Why even ask my opinion? Just do it yourself. The best thing I did was be honest and tell them I wanted to give them higher marks and I tried to give them a bonus and I tried to give them a raise. It all got taken away as if they never mattered in the first place and went right back up the pool. Why give us money if we aren’t allowed to use it anyway? Now that’s what I call fake news.

Same thing in my area, can't give a 5 unless they are being promoted. They say they have a rewarding results policy but HR actions are the opposite of that.

I’m not management but I had good talk with my manager about the reviews. My old manager would have covered the companies bu-t and been the typical boot li---r but my new manager (thank god) is great. She was very honest with me. Just be honest with your people. We are all getting screwed by this multibillion dollar company. The can definitely afford to give everyone a decent raise especially after all we’ve been through this year. But they would rather make their investors happy.

I feel your pain. It’s a tough spot to be in, and it’s not right. Personally, I have always been vocal about the scoring, and that I will score what I score, if a manager above me doesn’t like or changes it, either they can give the review since they know that employee and their contributions through the year best, or I will direct the employee to that manager during the review to get further explanation on why they got a lower score than I intended. One way or another, these turds need to start owning the cr---y things we are made to do, and then maybe they won’t want to do cr---y things anymore. I have never had to change a score being up front with my manager about this. BUT, I still can’t change the cr---y pool of money they give us. So now I just end up telling a 4 or 5 that they get some table scraps… but hey, great job and thanks for all you do! I certainly will try and also give you plenty of worthless bravo’s! Oh, and heaven forbid you try and give someone more than the “recommended” amount in the system, even if you have it left in the budget, uppers will freak out! “Why did you do that?” “Because they worked super hard, took on new responsibility and they deserve it.” “No, we have to do what it says in the system, we can’t do that.” “I don’t agree, but I suppose you will do what you do.” And I 100% told that employee the amount I wanted to give them and exactly who told me I could not.

You did not get a "raise." Inflation is ~8%. You got a pay DECREASE. Sounds like more American propaganda-most employees had and have corporate Stockholms syndromes

Left my old job after they said they’d implement a live 24/7 monitoring aspect to see how long we stayed in a window frame, or how long we stay in certain apps and technology nonsense. As if- when I know for a fact that the supervisor sat across from me just on her personal cellphone all day. Yeesh

Cracks are starting to show. It doesn't matter how much the stock is worth the company itself is morally bankrupt.

YEP. Stuck in the middle and still blamed because you're "management" by half the people you're having to deliver the news to, even though it isn't your decision.
It's just a bad place to be, and I'm so glad I jumped back out of the management pool after 10 years of putting up with that cr-p.
