Thread regarding Saudi Aramco layoffs

I saw Aramco outsourcing in action

They laid off some expats, one of who was truly excellent, because said employees had a morale problem. Management decided it would be easier to just outsource. A year and a half later, they are bringing in valuable people from other areas (that really can't spare them) to keep the function going internally.

Outsourcing only makes sense if you have clearly defined inputs and outputs and good communication. Anybody who thinks this exists anywhere at Aramco is crazy. Every day, there are unrecognized employees who sort out Aramco dysfunctional mess by doing way more than they are being given credit for doing. Morale is low because their efforts aren't even being acknowledged let alone rewarded, and management thinks the solution to this is outsourcing. If you think that packing up and moving half way around the world to work in this kind of environment is a good idea, all I can do is shake my head and wish you good luck.

After all these decades, this company is attempting to outsource everything.

After all the expats are gone, they will need to outsource (1) Critical Thinking, (2) Strong Work Ethic and (3) Business Ethics; none of which the Locals can do.

The Company should use robots.

Just understand that your only going to collect a salar. Don't expect to add to your knowledge or advance your career. Your skills and knowledge are not respected by your Saudi managers. Expats are disposable if oil prices drop again....and they will.

Retired Expat Advice: Never aspire to greatness and you will never let yourself down at Aramco. In other words, relax because working hard will not be noticed.

Aramco makes no sense for anyone who thinks they can stay there till they retire. Assume that your income in real terms will go down each year you are there and that the job will only last as long as oil prices stay high. If you need $X to reach a goal, and you can save $X in two years at Aramco, then the job makes sense as long as you have no other alternatives like that. If you come, don't bring your family. Be friendly, but don't work too hard. Above all, don't try to fix anything. Just shut your mouth and collect your $200 when you pass GO.

Thats good to know because as long as US expats go there with low expectations, there is less chance of them getting disappointed when not treated fairly or laid off early.

Nobody in the KSA is too worried about laid-off US Expats. When they do depart, they are better off financially than they were upon arrival. It’s good working there, when they need you.
