Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Have time for side gigs as well?

This company is draining my energy, but if it wasn't, I would be very happy to consider a side job. It would nice to earn some extra money. I notice that many here have side gigs and I find it very interesting because obviously not everyone is overwhelmed with work here !?

@1zep+1fcGhmc3, Hi, I’m your family doctor. Like you, I don’t put a lot of effort into what I do. Hope I haven’t missed anything pretending to review your blood work, but like you say, you don’t seem to notice. After all, I have these side gigs that take up a lot of my time. Knew you’d understand. See you soon buddy.

Why so jealous of middle managers? You can be one some day.

If poster doesn’t have enough to do is likely to be a middle manager

That poster may still work here. He’s a “technical professional” in a dying industry with nowhere to go. Wait, he can go to Starbucks or facebook like others have suggested.

You can tell that a lot of people that post on here (like the poster below) do not work at the company anymore. It is either disgruntled investors or ex employees. Seriously people, get a life.

If you have downtime at the office and are ready to leave before 4 or 5 then you don’t have enough to do. Unless you are not a technical professional and are just processing paperwork then it is somewhat understandable. But you can always do more than is expected to earn that high rating. Just to stress that if you are working from home and are not putting in the time that you are getting paid for then you are ripping off the company and should be fired.

I have side gigs and I feel i still complete all of my work ontime (Performance reviews reflect that) Obviously this would change with returning to work but I feel there are wasted hours (when you have downtime) in the office just waiting for the clock to hit 4 or 5. Working from home seems great provided you hit all your company goals.

These are the same people who only put in four hours of work from the office out of a nine hour day. Easy to do if you get to work late, take an early long lunch, and leave early to go home. The slackers are never caught because they don’t make waves and there is no work to be critical of. Yet they are experts at tooting their own ho-n over work they didn’t do and masters of jumping on email threads for visibility. All of which can be done working from home so I see their point.

And the guy saying it's unethical. Really? Oxy? Ethics? really?

Been doing another job for 7 months from home. Do about 2-3 hours for Oxy. Nobody has noticed as I am putting in as much productivity as everyone else in my group, so no big deal. WFH should continue.

Good points. Glad to see people like you doing the side gigs. You should be set up well for pure consulting work some day.

Have a pretty serious side gig outside the industry. It’s been a little draining time-wise but it’s a big relief knowing I don’t have to rely on this company or this industry if things go belly-up again. Also idk why everyone jumped on the guy saying WFH is better for side gigs. I don’t work my side gig on Oxy time but with WFH I have at least 2-3 extra hours a day where I’m not getting ready to head into the office or commuting.

What’s the problem with paying taxes on 1099 income. People who get paid in cash or other undocumented income and don’t pay their taxes should be locked up forever. We are sick and tired of having to carry all of the white collar criminals in society who get a free ride and don’t get caught. Society would be better without these people. All we can do is lock them up.

@1usv+1fcGhmc3 All these side gigs are about to get a wake-up call if you have not been paying taxes to the federal govt. Many of the pay apps are now going to be required to track transactions and issue 1099's. Welcome to the world of the fed watching every step.

Explain how WFH is better for side gigs. Are you doing the side gig on Oxy time? If so this is against policy and is unethical. If this is what you are doing you should be fired.

WFH was a great for internet based side gigs. The last two years have been fantastic from that standpoint. Not looking forward to going back. Side gigs are on hold until further notice but might be back if things normalize.

You cannot have a side job in the industry without reporting it to the company. If they find out you are doing work directly or indirectly for a competitor you will be fired on the spot. This is business.

I am sure post like this if read by HR or anyone in management makes them want to bring us all back in the office. I am drained as well, but with Oxy work, and no time for so called side gigs. Don't cry too much when you are told be back in the office all days. Thanks for the post.
