I know of two who are going to quit rather than go back to the office. One said it was too expensive to commute and the other already has a job lined up.

I think the guy that says TDM SONET DS1 DSL is not wanted is probably one of those smart guys that plugs a fiber in to an SFP that is BIDI, doesn't even have to figure out transmit or receive . That takes absolutely no talent.
It all depends on which skill set you have.
If your skills are old legacy technologies like DMS, Ds1, TDM, etc. Your skills are not wanted.
Go back to office and be happy you still have job and roof over your head.

Sorry about your friend, but they should has tried harder to find a better job. Every tech that quit the past year in Vegas got better paying jobs. I don’t blame them quitting for not getting the jab, with all the side effects and health problems it caused.
First off, you are not important enough to impact Lumen.
It all depends on can you find another job near your home with same pay and benefits.
There's a lot of McD and Walmarts out there.
One of my friends decided to quit his job over Vaccine mandates.
He is now very happy stocking groceries at local super market with half pay with minimum benefits.
